Mary Teresa Hick, born in 1939, passed away with her daughter Meghan, husband Chuck, and a plethora of family by her side, leaving behind a legacy of love and dedication. A native of Trumann, Arkansas, Mary later made her home in Hernando, Mississippi, where she built a life filled with compassion and community. Mary was educated at Fairview and Messick High School, where she was known for her spirited personality and was fondly remembered as "wild cherry." She became a licensed real estate professional, dedicating herself to the field from 1987 to 2008. She married Charles on December 21, 1956, at Kennedy Baptist Church in Memphis. The couple later worshipped at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Memphis, Tennessee. A woman who radiated warmth, Mary was known for her signature phrase, "Aren't ya cute," which she lovingly shared with family and friends. She was also known as "Tootsie" by everyone who knew her. She enjoyed teaching her grandchildren to play Super Mario Bros Nintendo and Poker. Mary loved a day out picnicking and eating fried chicken. More importantly, Mary was a force to be reckoned with. She was a voice to the voiceless. She fought for women's rights and against racial inequality. When no one would stand up, Mary would. She is a perfect example of who we should all strive to be. Mary is survived by her beloved spouse Charles Hick, and her children: daughter Dawn Cartwright and son Kevin Hick (Cliare). She was also the cherished mother of Meghan (Mary Grace) Riley (Buddy). She is survived by 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, and was preceded in death by 2 grandchildren. Mary was the daughter of Mary Inez Carroll Stanley (1916–1986) and William R. Stanley. Her light, humor, and strength will be remembered by all who were blessed to know her. The family will be receiving friends Saturday, May 3, from 2:30-3:30 with services beginning at 3:30 all at Hernando Funeral Home. A private family graveside will be held at a later date.
