Mary Kernaghan Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Joseph J. Pula Funeral Home, Inc.. on Feb. 3, 2026.
Mary Grace (Byrne) Kernaghan, 91, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2026, at Lehigh Valley Hospice House in East Stroudsburg, PA. Born in Philadelphia on October 5, 1934, she was
the daughter of the late Charles and Ellen (McGettigan) Byrne.

She was the loving wife of the late Joseph B. Kernaghan. They celebrated 53 wonderful years of marriage before his passing in April, 2010.

Mary and Joe moved to Stroudsburg in 1963, when Joe became a professor at East Stroudsburg University.

Mary was a smart lady who enjoyed her family, traveling, playing bridge, and spending time with her friends in the book club. She enjoyed spirited discussions regarding political and social issues and loved a good story. After having four children, she graduated from East Stroudsburg University and then obtained her Master's Degree in Social Work from Marywood University in Scranton, PA. She had a successful career as a social worker and was the northeastern Pennsylvania regional program manager for the state Department of Welfare's Office on Mental Retardation. Most of all, she was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. Mary will be deeply missed by all her friends and family.

She was a member of St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church of Stroudsburg.

Mary is survived by her three daughters, Maureen K. Coyle of Bethlehem, PA, Eileen Kernaghan and her husband, Clare North, of Ann Arbor, MI, and Kate Raup and her husband Daniel of Wallingford, PA; her grandchildren Michael Coyle (Cloudi), Patrick Coyle, Molly DeWind, Daniel DeWind, Grace Raup, and Richard Raup; and her great-granddaughter Fiona Coyle. She is also survived by her brother, James Byrne (Anne), of Williamstown, NJ. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her son, Joseph B. Kernaghan, and her brothers Charles
Byrne and Patrick Byrne.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, February 7, 2026 at St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church, 818 Main St, Stroudsburg, PA 18360. The family will receive family and friends from 10:00 AM to the time of service, with Monsignor John A. Bergamo as celebrant. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Joseph J. Pula Funeral Home, Inc., 23 N 9th Street, Stroudsburg, PA 18360.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to any charity that provides aid and support to children, such as Save the Children.
