Mary Inell King Hix, affectionately known to many as "Inell" or "Meme," passed away peacefully on May 24, 2025, in Rock Hill, South Carolina, at the age of 93. Her life was one of deep faith, enduring love, and warmhearted wisdom.
Inell was born on January 14, 1932, in Moss, Tennessee, the youngest of eight children. Raised along the banks where the Obey and Cumberland Rivers meet, her early years were shaped by humble means, rich family traditions, and a deep appreciation for life's simple blessings. Her mother, a hardworking and devout woman, instilled in her a strong Christian faith that would guide her throughout her life.
She married the love of her life, James Dowell "Jim" Hix, Sr., on September 7, 1951, in a quiet ceremony at her parents' home. Together, they built a joyful and loving family and shared many adventures. Inell often said her greatest accomplishments were her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren-and the faith she passed on to them.
Inell is survived by her daughter, Terry Shick, and her son, James Dowell Hix, Jr. (Evette). She was a proud grandmother to Terrell Callaham (Thomas), Zack Ward, Melia Leedy (Robert), and Rebekah Hix. She was also blessed to be the great-grandmother of Grae and Maeve Leedy.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jim Hix, whose humor, hard work, and spirit she cherished and celebrated throughout her life.
Inell lived with vibrancy and grace. Whether she was managing a busy hair salon in Knoxville,TN, sewing outfits for her family, traveling to Europe with church friends, or hosting dinner parties in Rock Hill, she brought joy and warmth to every room she entered. She loved reading the Bible, listening to the music of Vince Gill and telling childhood stories that blended history, humor, and family lore.
Her faith in God was the cornerstone of her life. She raised her family to know Jesus and remained an active and devoted member of the Church of Christ throughout her years. She believed the secrets to a happy life were honesty, kindness, listening, and staying true to one's faith.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Mary Inell King Hix will be held at Charlotte Avenue Church of Christ on June 8, 2025 at 2:00pm. Inell's life was a testament to love, resilience, and devotion. Her legacy lives on in the family she adored and the many lives she touched.
She will be remembered always for her strength, her stories, her generosity, and her unwavering faith.
