Mary Ann Kratzer, born Mary Ann Smith on December 25, 1949, in Burlington, Washington, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2025, in her home at the age of 75 surrounded by loved ones. Her passing marks the loss of a beloved mother, nana, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend whose warmth and generosity touched countless lives.
Mary was a lifelong resident of Skagit County and remained deeply connected to her community throughout her life. A devout Christian, she found spiritual nourishment and fellowship through weekly services and Bible studies. In her later years, she was especially active at Sedro Woolley Community Church, where she formed lasting friendships and contributed to the church's mission with unwavering faith.
Mary had a creative spirit that shone through in everything she did. She delighted in crafting-crocheting granny squares and small trinkets, coloring vibrant scenes, and sewing handmade Barbie clothing were just a few of the ways she expressed her artistic flair. Her love for movies and music added joy to her days, often shared with those around her. Known as a social butterfly, Mary thrived in the company of others. Whether volunteering at her local senior center, celebrating a soon to be mother, or attending another's birthday party, she brought light and laughter wherever she went. Once Mary met you, she knew you for life.
Her greatest joy in life came from spending time with family. Mary is lovingly remembered by her two sons, Robert and wife Sheila Kratzer, and Timothy Kratzer; her grandchildren Austin Kratzer, Kymberly Kratzer; Samantha and AJ Grimoire; Lesley Kratzer, and Damon Kratzer. She also leaves behind her cherished sisters: Beverly Lewellen and Susan Phipps, as well as Joanna Bruno.
Mary's love extended to many nieces and nephews who held special places in her heart: Troy Phipps III (his five children), Dianna Phipps, Wendy Jackson (and her two children and five grandchildren), Jennifer Brawford (her husband Thomas Brawford and their two children), Tammy Brawford (her three children and two grandchildren), Rebecca Gonzalez (her husband Rigo Gonzalez and their four children and granddaughter).
She was preceded in death by her parents Robert Earl Smith and Rosella Pearl Smith (Orestad), brother-in-law Troy Phipps II, her beloved granddaughter Stephanie Michelle Kratzer, and her great niece Lexus Nicole Phipps.
Those who knew Mary will remember not only the kindness that radiated from her but also the way she made everyone feel welcomed and unforgettable. Her big heart and even bigger smile were hallmarks of a life lived with compassion, grace and humor.
In honor of Mary's memory and to help provide a proper celebration of life and gravestone tribute befitting such a beautiful soul, the family kindly requests that donations be made in lieu of flowers or food. Contributions can be directed to Samantha Grimoire (2747 Old Highway 99 North Rd, Burlington WA 98233) or submitted through Mary's Spot Fund Fundraiser site at: http://spot.fund/4nzrqfssc
Mary will be laid to rest at Bow Cemetery alongside her father Robert Earl Smith, and other family members in an intimate graveside ceremony. A celebration of life will be held at Bay View Civic Hall (12615 C St, Mount Vernon WA 98273) on October 25th 11am till 2pm all family and friends are welcome. In honor of Mary we request her two favorite colors yellow or red be worn to the celebration.
May Mary's legacy of love continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her. Her memory will forever remain a blessing in the hearts of those she touched.

I´ve known Mary Ann since 1st grade. We were neighbors in a sense. I would come over to see if I could ride one of their horses. Mary Ann would die laughing because she knew I was terrified of them. Yep, that laugh of her puts a smile on my face.

We kind of lost contact over the years. I have many regrets not contacting her more to try and get together.

She babysat my youngest Christopher, who is now 43. She was always willing even if it were last minute. She was excellent with children and the kids loved her.

She did have a kind heart and deep love for her Lord. Save me a place next to you Mary when it´s my time to go.

You are so missed by many. Rest in Peace..... Lee Colyn
