Mary Esparza Licon passed away on November 5, 2024, after a lengthy illness. Mary was born in Van Horn, Texas to Manuel and Socorro Esparza on October 14, 1955.
Mary lived in Van Horn all her life. At the age of fifteen she welcomed her son, Marcos, into this world; he was the light of her life. Her mom passed away suddenly. At the age of sixteen, with a one-year-old son, she valiantly remained becoming the caretaker to her dad. This was a wise decision as her son now had a remarkable grandfather. Soon Mary’s father fell ill leaving Mary to care for her baby and her father.
Mary was kindness embodied. For twelve years she took care of her father with gentleness and love, never complaining. This is the example seared into her son's heart--that caring for someone you love is the whole purpose of life.
Life went on. Her father passed away and her son moved on to college to pursue his teaching degree. He went on to make her immensely proud. Mary ventured out and got a job for the first time at the age of thirty-three. Mary was extremely shy. She had never been alone. She had always spent her days caring for someone. This was the most difficult time in her life but succeed she did.
She worked at Pilot convenience store and gas station in Van Horn. In her new world she thrived. She possessed an excellent work ethic; She made many friends. Her smile lit up the room. She literally whistled while she worked. Mary Loved the color lavender; she was often seen wearing lavender ribbons.
When she got ill, Marcos did what he had seen his mother do. He moved back to Van Horn and took care of her. Together they made numerous trips to El Paso to dine, watch movies and shop. Mary loved to watch TV with her son.
She had been hospitalized when they informed her of Marco's sudden passing. When her son died, her light went out. She was bedridden and could not attend her son's funeral. She lingered for 3 months barely able to function. She always had her rosary and bible in her hand always trusting in God. She earned her reward and is now with her son.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Manuel and Socorro Esparza, and her sister Gloria Bradley.
She is survived by her sister, Vangie (Larry) Bender of McPherson, a brother, Manny Esparza of Fort Worth, Texas, two half-sisters, Emma Vasquez, and Bertha Lara.
As per her wishes, she was cremated and will lie in rest alongside her beloved son, Marcos.
A funeral mass will be held on Friday, November 22nd at 2:00 pm, officiated by Father Serjio Legarreta at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. The burial will follow at The Van Horn Cemetery.
