Mary Mall Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by C. J. Lucas Funeral Home, Inc - Mount Carmel on Nov. 17, 2025.

Publish in a newspaper

After a long struggle with the devastating illness that is dementia, it is with broken hearts that we say aloha to the firecracker of a woman who was Mary Margaret Mall-MMM.

Mary Margaret, 74, was born on June 1, 1951, to the late Kenneth Shultz and Elizabeth (Dorkoski) Shultz. She was raised in Mount Carmel and attended Mount Carmel High School, where she earned the nickname "Chunky" thanks to her job selling candy bars of the same name-when she wasn't twirling her majorette baton.

After graduating in 1969, she worked in Washington, D.C. for a short time. Being as fiercely private as she was, it cannot be confirmed nor denied that during this period she may have been working as a spy. Later, she graduated from the Empire School of Cosmetology in Harrisburg and worked as a hairdresser for several years. She continued to cut hair for family and friends long after that.

In November of 1975, she married George Leonard Mall Jr. and returned to Mount Carmel, where she went on to have two children just 14 months apart-Gretchen Ann and Joshua Wade-who changed her life forever. Once her children were in school, she worked for Mount Carmel Township as a secretary before joining the Department of Revenue in Harrisburg in 1993.

Mary Margaret moved to Middletown, PA, after separating from her husband in the late 90s. She and George remained friends until her passing on November 10, 2025.

Mary Margaret spent much of her life connected to the Catholic Church and her faith. After her retirement in 2011, she traveled often to visit her children wherever they lived across the country-Arizona being one of her favorite destinations because she hated the cold. When she wasn't visiting family, she enjoyed country music, line dancing, gardening, shopping (alone or with friends), and spending time with the wonderful circle she built in Middletown. Whether it was Friday night dinners with her Department of Revenue friends or traveling with coworkers from her time as a receptionist at Land Rover, Mary Margaret deeply valued those friendships.

While she didn't enjoy cooking, she loved to bake. If you were lucky, you may have received some of her famous homemade bread. Anyone who knew her recognized her big heart, shaped by her faith and family. Although her expression didn't always show it, she was deeply thoughtful and generous with her family, friends, and neighbors.

Mary Margaret's children, Gretchen (Matthew) Sage and Josh Mall, will love and miss her always. She is also survived by her Uncle Luke Shultz, her ex-husband George Mall, her sister Susan Horan, her niece Amanda Horan Swatsky (Daniel), and many beloved cousins.

The family would like to extend a special thank-you to all who visited and cared for her-especially Carol Hubler and her family, who stood by her side with love and support during this difficult time.

A Prayer Service will be held on Friday, December 5th at 1 p.m. in the C J Lucas Funeral Home Inc., 27 N. Vine St., Mt. Carmel, PA 17851. Burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family. A visitation will be held in the Funeral Home from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. It was MMM's wish to be surrounded by purple flowers at this time. To send condolences to the family, please visit www.cjlucasfuneralhome.com
