Mary Maxwell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Agape Life Services Funeral Home on Jan. 15, 2026.
Mary Elizabeth "Baby" Maxwell, 85, of Orange County, Virginia, passed away on January 11, 2026, was born on April 19, 1940, in Allegheny County, Virginia, to the late Walter and Lottie Madden. She was one of four sisters and was lovingly known to nearly everyone simply as "Baby." Even her nieces and nephews affectionately called her Aunt Baby, a name that reflected the warmth and familiarity she carried throughout her life.
Baby was a deeply devoted woman of faith who loved the Lord with her whole heart. She spent countless hours studying the Bible and spoke to Jesus as if He were right beside her, sometimes even raising her voice at Him, only to quickly apologize. Her relationship with God was personal, passionate, and sincere. She lived with grace, confidence, and joy, and she often found comfort and inspiration in the words of the Bible.
A dedicated homemaker, Baby took great pride in herself and her appearance. She was always dressed, no matter the occasion, and was well known for her signature style, especially her beloved popped collar. She carried herself with dignity and assurance wherever she went. Baby also enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. She loved watching classic movies and westerns, with Gunsmoke being a particular favorite.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil L. Maxwell; her son, Cecil E. Maxwell; her sister, Laura R. "Sang" Murphy; and her sister, Judy P. Maxwell.
She is survived by her sister, Juanita M. "Honey" Martin, and her children: John L. Maxwell (Joanna), Brian K. Maxwell (Lori), Mary C. L. "Dolly" Rood, Lenoira E. J. M. Cooper (Jeffrey), Joseph P. Maxwell (Emily), and Jason S. Maxwell (Michelle). She is also survived by sixteen grandchildren, thirty-two great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren, all of whom were a tremendous source of pride and joy to her.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Agape Life Services, located at 2105 Emancipation Highway, Fredericksburg, Virginia. Funeral services will be held on January 24, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Sharon Baptist Church, 4201 Riverland Road, Clifton Forge, VA, where Baby will be laid to rest beside her parents and her husband.
Mary Elizabeth "Baby" Maxwell will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her joyful spirit, her strong personality, and the love she poured into her family and everyone who knew her. To send flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of Mary, please visit our floral store.
