Mary McGillicuddy Obituary
Mary Rose McGillicuddy.
The name itself feels like a sentence as the life itself is a legacy.
Mother of four, "Bim Bim" of the same, and teacher of many, she will be remembered for her sharp intellect, stubborn determination, and an unending love for her family. A pioneer as much as an inspiration, she steadfastly stood for those she loved as much as she defended what she believed was right. She faced life with a seemingly fearless determination that has inspired many to learn more, to help more, to enjoy more, to love more.
Mary loved few things more than a long meal and an even longer visit to a museum (always accompanied by her "Mac"). But she said what she loved most was being a mom (and later a Bim Bim). This love, she expressed best through a thoughtful gift, often presented as part of a greater event, curated by herself. Mary accepted any opportunity to travel, especially when it allowed her to experience the history she so tirelessly studied. However, she was always happy to return home to the city she lived her whole life through, Washington DC. Who hasn't received a piece of advice from Mary, plucked from the brain of her favorite columnist, Carolyn Hax? Or been gifted a clipping from the WaPo Weekend Section, about a new, or by that point not so new, DC restaurant?
Her life spent studying law, then government and history, left her with an encyclopedic knowledge of all three. Sometimes shared with a White Zinfandel, or a Radius Red blend, Mary was a skilled conversationalist; equal parts knowledgeable and curious. She recognized life as a puzzle constructed of events and memories. If there was an occasion to be had or a memory to be made she was there to celebrate it, and celebrate she did!
Born in Washington, DC, to Daniel Francis McGillicuddy and Mary Ann (Knobbe) McGillicuddy, Mary had the unique experience of attending Catholic Schools from Kindergarten to law school. Starting at Our Lady Queen of Peace and ending at Catholic Law. Contrary to what her favorite sweatshirt might suggest, Electoral College was not an alma mater. She met Richard in 1974 at a party in DC. Starting her law career, and family, as a public defender, she would later transition to teaching World History and Government at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton High School (Catholic again!).
Mary's legacy carries on in those who love her most: Her husband of 47 years, Richard; Her four kids; Michael, Megan (Stephane), Daniel (Laura), and Theresa (Danielle). Her four grandkids, to whom she is affectionately known as Bim Bim; Claire, Emily, Cooper and Brigham; And two brothers, Mark and James. She was predeceased by her brother Hugh.
