Mary Mitchell passed away Sunday, July 24th 2022 at Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, with all her nephews and nieces by her bed side, joining husband, Francis Mitchell Sr. and her beloved son, Francis Mitchell Jr. She was born in Lawrence on April 5th, 1926, of eight children, daughter of Ruffina Silva and Joseph Rocha.
Her family resided in several places in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, eventually settling in Gloucester, MA. She attended the Gloucester public schools and after graduation, she married her husband Francis (Buddy) Sr. on June 1947. They enjoyed 65 years of marriage, residing at Mount Vernon Street, where they raised their only son Francis (Chuck) Jr.
Mary had worked as a fresh fish cutter at Gorton's of Gloucester prior to being employed for several years at the First National Store on Eastern Avenue in Gloucester. After the store closed, Mary was employed at the Gloucester Lyceum and Sawyer Free Library. After retirement, she continued to work there as a volunteer.
Mary was a very religious person. She became a member of the third Order of Carmelite in Danvers, MA. She was also a member of the lady auxiliary at the Our Lady of Good Voyage, DES and GF Portuguese Clubs. She enjoyed going to the Gloucester YMCA where she made many friends. She was a very kind soul and treated everyone with love and respect.
Mary is survived by her sister, Irene Lowe of Maine, sister-in-law, Judie Carter Rocha. A very special niece and Godchild, Larraine Mitchell Milone. She also is survived by many nieces and nephews, who provided for her wellbeing in her later years. In addition to her husband, son, she was predeceased by her parents, Ruffina Silva and Joseph Rocha and her father and mother in laws, Joseph and Carrie Mitchell. In addition, she was predeceased by her siblings; sisters: Sylvia Rocha Mitchell and husband Manual, Grace Rocha King and husband Herbert, Millie Rocha Ball and husband James, her brothers; Alex and wife May Livingston Rocha, Joseph Rocha, and Manny Rocha. Her In-laws: Gus and Carolyn Foote, Joseph and Catherin Mitchell and a special friend, Theresa O. Wonson.
A special thanks to Seacoast, Care Dimensions Staff and Diane Palmer Eason for the wonderful care provided to Mary on her last days. Also, a special thanks to all her nephews and nieces for the wonderful love and devotion towards their aunt Mary.
Her funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, 142 Prospect Street, Gloucester on Thursday, July 28, 2022 at 9:30 AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Masks are required in church. Visiting hours at the Campbell Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester on Wednesday (TODAY) from 4-7 PM. In lieu of flowers, contribution can be made to Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, the Francis Chuck Mitchell Scholarship Fund, c/o Beeman Elementary School, or any other charity of one's choice.
