Mary Ann Mothershead, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on October 13, 2025, in Anchorage, Alaska, at the age of 90. She was born on June 23, 1935, in Magnolia, Iowa, to Edward and Mathilda McEvoy.
Mary Ann graduated from Logan High School in 1953. She moved from her family farm in Logan, IA to Omaha, NE where she worked and lived with her Aunt Lizzie. During this time she met her future husband Lowell Armstrong who had enlisted in the United States Air Force. They married and were stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska.
After several relocations their final station was Anchorage, Alaska.
She worked in daycare at Eielson Air Force Base in Fairbanks, Alaska and operated her own in home daycare in Anchorage, AK. Furthermore, Mary Ann showcased her entrepreneurial spirit by operating a janitorial company in both Fairbanks and Anchorage.
Her community involvement was extensive. As a member of the Anchorage Youth Bowling Association, she was not only certified as a bowling coach but also dedicated her time working at all bowling tournaments. Mary Ann's generosity knew no bounds as she volunteered at ARC of Anchorage and the Special Olympics, touching the lives of many. Also volunteered her time to the voting polls.
Mary Ann's Catholic faith guided her through her many endeavors and relationships. She was blessed with having two "Great Loves of her life", Lowell Armstrong and Bob Mothershead who both preceded her in death. Also preceding her were her parents Edward and Mathilda McEvoy of Logan IA.
Being the oldest sibling of seven she is survived by Ellen Dahl, (Magnolia, IA), Joan Clark (Mondamin, IA), Frank (Anna Pauline) McEvoy (Gretna, NE), Rose (Jake) Bessembinders (Omaha, NE), Mike (Nancy) McEvoy (Crescent, IA), Pat McEvoy (Missouri Valley, IA).
She was a loving mother to Theresa Armstrong (Daughter) and Phillip Armstrong (Son) and to Sarah Armstrong (Daughter in law) A cherished grandmother to Michelle DeVall (Brian), the late James Staregowski, Vanessa Adney (Casey), Amber Armstrong (Parker Hamlin), Ashleigh Ramey (Thomas), and Aryelle Armstrong. She was also a doting great-grandmother to Jay Staregowski, Taryn DeVall, Xyler DeVall, Croix DeVall, Rylan Adney, Ella Adney, and the eagerly expected Baby Ramey.
Mary Ann's interests were as varied as they were passionate. She enjoyed cake decorating, baking and cooking. She was especially known for her banana bread and cookies. Hand-knitting sweater for her family. Her skillful hands also sewed clothing for her children and crafted intricate Barbie outfits for her daughter. A lover of the outdoors, she found solace in her garden, tending to her flowers, and sharing memorable moments camping and fishing with her loved ones.
Sports were a significant part of Mary Ann's life. She was a fervent college football fan, cheering on the Nebraska Huskers with zeal. The San Francisco 49ers also held a special place in her heart, and she reveled in attending the Pro Bowls in Hawaii, combining her love for the game with her love for vacationing on the beautiful islands.
Mary Ann's legacy is characterized by her loving nature, her sense of humor, and her deep-seated faith. She leaves behind a family that adores her and a community that respects the impact she had on the lives she touched. Her memory will be cherished and kept alive through the stories shared by those who knew her best. Mary Ann Mothershead's journey on earth may have come to an end, but the love she spread and the joy she brought to so many will continue to resonate for generations to come.
