Mary Mullen, 82, died Monday at Lehigh Valley Hospital Muhlenberg. Her husband of 59 years is Stephen Mullen.

Born in Scranton, daughter of the late Martin and Kathryn McLane Roche, she was a member of Holy Cross Parish until its closing, and later St. John Neumann Parish. A graduate of Scranton Central High School and Marywood University, Mary taught school in Clifton, New Jersey. After she raised her children, she worked for many years as a substitute teacher in the Scranton School District.

Mary delighted in the achievements of her family and friends. She had a keen eye for detail and a photographic memory - she could always be counted on to recall details like names, dates, phone numbers and birthdays.

An avid sports fan, Mary enjoyed watching Penn State/Notre Dame football games and NCAA tournaments, and was an active member of her weekly Bellevue Poker Club for more than 50 years. She will be deeply missed, but fondly remembered, by all who knew her.

Also surviving a son, Stephen Mullen and wife, Lisha; two daughters, Mary Kathryn Walsh and husband, Michael; and Ellen Waverka and husband, Craig; eight grandchildren, Leila Leech and husband, Doug; Ryan Mullen, Molly and Michael Walsh; Kathryn Bachman and husband, Cody; and Casey, Luke and Logan Waverka; and two great-grandchildren, Doug and Riker Leech.

She was also preceded in death by a brother, John Roche; and an infant daughter, Molly.

The funeral will be Saturday with Mass at 10 a.m. at St. John Neumann Parish at Nativity of Our Lord Church, 633 Orchard St., celebrated by Monsignor Joseph A. Quinn, pastor. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery.

Friends may call Friday, 4 to 8 p.m., at the Neil W. Regan Funeral Home Inc., 1900 Pittston Ave. Masks are required. The family requests that those attending the funeral proceed directly to the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Center, 2010 Adams Ave., or stjosephscenter.org.
