Mary Jo Kahler Prater, age 87, of Warner Robins, Georgia, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2025.
Born on February 18, 1938, Mary was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She had a lifelong passion for caring for children, which she fulfilled through her work running an in-home daycare. Her home was a place filled with laughter, love, and the warmth of many young lives she nurtured over the years. Mary had a gift for making every child feel safe, valued, and deeply loved.
Mary was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church of Centerville, where she found joy and community in her spiritual life.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Kahler and Anna Marie Ruhe Kahler; her beloved husband, Gerald Thomas Prater; and her brother, Joseph Kahler, Jr.
Mary leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion in her children: Linda Thames of Warner Robins, Michael Prater (Bonnie) of Warner Robins, and Julie Mixon (Jerry) of Centerville. She is also survived by her sisters, Elsie McQuistion of Ohio, and Jean Carmack Pigman (Jhon) of Nevada; six grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Monday, August 18, 2025, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Heritage Memorial Funeral Home.
A memorial service to celebrate Mary's life will take place on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at The Well at Centerville, located at 600 N Houston Lake Blvd, Centerville, GA 31028.

Met Mary and her family in 1978, we became very good friends, confided with each other for many yrs. I considered Mary a very good friend. My children and grandkids knew her as Ms. Mary. My comfort is that she is now with Jerry and her Lord. Pat Gibbens
