Mary Range Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Michalik Funeral Home on Jan. 18, 2026.
Mary Grace Range, aged 66, passed away in early January, 2026. She was the beloved mother of Grace Magnus, Max Singerman, and Miles Singerman and she adored her children-in-law Erik Magnus and Kerri Singerman. Her greatest joy was being the grandmother to her two grandchildren, Evelyn and Dean Magnus. She was a devoted daughter to her late parents Charles L. Range and Mary Joan Range. She loved her siblings, the late Charles L. Range, Margaux Range Maybell, Elizabeth Range Kiely, the late Susan Range, Anne Range Barclay, and Ben Range. She is also survived by an array of nieces, nephews, and close friends.

Mary Grace, known to most as MG, was wickedly funny, vivacious, beautiful, and intellectual. There was simply no one like her. She was glamorous and witty, a wise confidante, and a darling friend. She preached the power of a good book, the perfect black dress (of which you can never have too many), and stimulating conversation over good coffee. She always knew the perfect Dorothy Parker or Oscar Wilde quote to suit the occasion.

Mary Grace attended The University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana where she studied English. She was a lifelong resident of Chicago, and an unofficial ambassador to Wicker Park. She worked as a copywriter at Design Design for many years before founding Paper & Paperless, a boutique marketing firm where she served as principal and creative director. She was a talented and creative professional who had many admiring clients.

Mary Grace made everything around her beautiful, including her exquisite home and legendary closets. Fashionable and fun, she was the kind of person who was so generous she would insist on giving you the accessories she was wearing, with the promise of more when you came to her home.

MG was a bon vivant in every sense: an art lover, reader, public radio devotee, gourmand, and culture vulture. MG had an incredible musical IQ and always had something great playing ("I have that on vinyl in the basement" was one of her regular retorts). She was passionate about politics and steadfast in her belief in social justice. She taught her children the importance of curiosity, wisdom, and kindness.

Mary Grace's children are grateful to those who loved and cared for MG over the years.

A Celebration of Life will be held in her honor on February 7, 2026, at the Hall at the Robey, 2018 W. North Ave., Chicago, IL, 60647. We ask everyone to dress fun and fabulous in Mary Grace's honor, black attire not necessary.
