Mary Jean (Green) Reed of Holt, Michigan, age 98, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2025 with family by her side. She was born in Pickford, MI on April 12, 1927, to the late Clarence and Mary Beatrice (Eveleigh) Green. Mary spent most of her adult life in Holt, living in the same home for 66 years. But her heart always held a special place for her hometown in the Upper Peninsula. She graduated from Michigan School for the Deaf in Flint. Her greatest accomplishment was her family.
Mary was married to Larry Reed for 51 years, until his passing in 2002. She is survived by her two children: Peggy Anderson and Steve (LeAnne) Reed; five grandchildren: Chad Anderson, Paul (Nicole) Anderson, Ryan (Kailyn) Anderson, Stephanie (Drew) Dziachan, Jacob Reed; seven great grandchildren: Kaleb and Kendal Anderson, Bailey and Rylee Anderson, Reed Anderson, Adryn and Caden Dziachan. She is also survived by her sister, Pauline Wentz. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Lawrence Willard Reed; parents, Clarence and Beatrice Green; brother, Raymond Green; son-in-law, Craig Anderson; brother-in-law, Richard Wentz.
Despite being deaf and her petite statute, it was hard slowing her down (literally and figuratively). She enjoyed her deaf friends and community, but her greatest enjoyment and love was her family - and they all loved her. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, and a grandma/great-grandma who cherished her grand and great-grand children! You could find her (and grandpa) at many of their activities and sporting events and she also loved spending holidays with her family. Despite the language barrier between her deaf world and the hearing world of her entire family, there was no shortage of understanding and love by them all.
A private service will be held with her family to celebrate Mary's life.
In lieu of flowers charitable donations in honor of Mary can be made to the Pickford Historical Society at PO Box 572 Pickford, MI 49774. Or to Holt Links the special education program at 5885 W. Holt Rd. Holt, MI 48842.
