Mary Scheid Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Directors - Royal Oak on Oct. 15, 2024.
Mary Louise Scheid, age 76, of Royal Oak, passed away on October 13, 2024. She was born on May 6, 1948 to James and Nora Hoff.
Mary Lou was a proud graduate of St. Mary High School in 1966, where she met the love of her life, Don. Their love grew, and on February 23, 1973, they were married, spending an incredible fifty-one years side by side.
Some of Mary Lou's working years were spent at Import Bouquets and General Electric. More recently, she was a familiar and beloved face at Royal Oak Schools, serving as a lunch monitor.
But her love for family was at the center of everything she did. She was a homemaker who was wholeheartedly invested in the well-being and happiness of her family and extended neighborhood family. Always one to help others, she babysat many children over the years, especially while her own children were growing up, earning her the title of "second mom" to many.
A woman of deep faith, Mary Lou was a devoted Catholic and an active member of her community. She coached basketball at St. Mary's and was known for her unwavering commitment to her children's activities. For 12 years, she lovingly washed the Dondero football uniforms, ensuring the team was always ready for the field. And her enthusiasm knew few bounds, as she might have been the only mom in history who was asked to leave a Dondero football game!
Passionate about sports, she was an avid fan of the Detroit Tigers and the Tampa Bay Rays. And beyond sports, she had a special place in her heart for the St. Patrick's Day Parade, often leading the charge with her festive spirit.
Known for her love of conversation, Mary Lou could talk your ear off and was fondly given the nickname "the bird" for her constant chirping. She was a good sport though, and proudly wore a t-shirt that humorously read, "nasty old bird." And her "Cronin goodbyes" were legendary and never short, as she had a way of making every departure heartfelt and memorable.
In addition to her many roles, Mary Lou took great joy in decorating for every holiday, making her home a warm and festive place for all who visited. Her energy, warmth, and unwavering devotion to her loved ones will never be forgotten.
Mary Lou will be remembered as the beloved wife of Don. Loving mother of Jeffrey, Joseph, Erica (Jason R.) Bayliss, and Andrew (Christen). Dear sister of Dan (Lyn) Hoff, Robert Hoff, and the late James Hoff and Thomas Hoff. Further survived by her sister-in-law, Gayle Hoff, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, and four grand-dogs.
Visitation for Mary Lou will be held on Thursday, October 17, from 3 - 8 p.m. (Rosary at 7 p.m.) at Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Home, 705 W. Eleven Mile Rd. (four blocks east of Woodward), Royal Oak. The Funeral Mass for Mary Lou will be celebrated on Friday, October 18 at 10 a.m. (9:30 visitation) at St. Mary Catholic Church, 730 S. Lafayette Ave., Royal Oak.

With names alphabetically close and birthdays chronologically close, Mary Lou and I were often close neighbors in homerooms and had nearby lockers. She was always an animated bundle of happiness. Her passing definitely dims earth's light. Thanks, Mary Lou for all you gave to all you met.
