Sister Mary John Shin, SND Sister Mary John Shin, SND was born in Daegu, South Korea, May 31, 1946. She grew up in a devout Catholic family who took in many refugees after the Korean War providing them with food, clothing and shelter. This family example of concern and care for others formed Sister Mary John as a person who always thought of the needs of others less fortunate than herself.
Sister graduated from Daegu University with a BA degree in International Trading. This degree allowed her to work in the world of finances as a young adult. Her financial skills proved to be helpful in the many ministries she was involved in throughout her life. Desiring to grow in her faith and live it out in practical ways she joined a lay movement which helped the poor and destitute. This organization sent her to France for 4 years to study theology and social work. During her time in France she was involved in outreach programs for those on the margins of society.
Upon her return to South Korea Sister Mary John entered religious life where she felt she could help more people. Eventually, she came to the United States to assist the Korean community here in the Los Angeles area. After some time in the U.S. she became an American citizen and joined the Sisters of Notre Dame of Los Angeles. For the past 10 years Sister Mary John has been ministering as a Chaplain at Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital. Her great compassion and gentle way of dealing with people made her a much loved staff member. She radiated a positive joyful spirit that lifted patients' spirits. Now after many years of serving others she rests in the loving arms of God our Father.
