Mary Sorem

Mary Joanne Sorem Jetmore Mary Joanne Sorem, 89, passed away July 17, 2022 at Hodgeman County Health Center ISB, Jetmore. Mary Joanne was born November 13, 1932 in Dodge City, the daughter of Louis C. and Irene K. Goebel Schauvliege. She grew up in Hodgeman County and graduated from Jetmore High School. Mary Joanne graduated from the University of Kansas Medical School with a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing. She worked as a registered nurse at St. John's Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma before returning to Hodgeman County where she raised five children and worked as an RN with the Hodgeman County Health Department. She was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Jetmore and St. Lawrence Altar Society, the Hodgeman County Genealogical Society, served on the Area Mental Health Board, and was a lifetime member of the Kansas University Alumni Association. She enjoyed genealogy, playing bridge, travelling, and raising her children. On November 25, 1954 she married James R. Sorem in Jetmore; he passed away January 31, 2002. Survivors include: four sons, Dr. James R. (Gentra) Sorem Jr., Tulsa, OK, Richard J. (Melinda) Sorem, Jetmore, Dr. William A. (Shelly) Sorem, Katy, Texas, Dr. Robert M. (Kelly) Sorem, Lawrence; daughter, Jenifer Jill (Robert) Rivera, Albuquerque, New Mexico; ten grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband James, and a brother, Donald C. Schauvliege. Funeral mass will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 23, 2022 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Jetmore, with Father Don Bedore presiding. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Friday, July 22, 2022 at Beckwith Funeral Home, Jetmore. Vigil service will be Friday, July 22, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Jetmore. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery, Jetmore.
