Mary Veckman of Palm Beach Gardens passed away on March 2nd, having lived an incredible 109 ½ years. Born in 1915 in Manhattan, she witnessed a time when horse-drawn carriages were just as common as automobiles. Her parents, Joe and Christina Posledovich, were immigrants from Russia. Tragically, the family contracted the Spanish Flu in 1918, resulting in the loss of her father. Mary grew up in Manhattan alongside her sister, Olga, and brother, Bill.
In 1942, she married Mark Veckman, and during WWII, they relocated to Indiana, where Mark took on the role of head of Republic Aviation's aircraft refurbishment facility. After the war, they returned to New York and eventually settled in Huntington Bay. While Mary was primarily a homemaker, she also enjoyed playing bridge, actively participated in an investment club, and hosted numerous gatherings for family and friends. She was renowned as a gracious hostess, making everyone feel welcome in her home.
In 1965, Mary and Mark moved to Florida, where they enjoyed a long and fulfilling retirement. Mark predeceased her in 1988. A social butterfly, Mary had a vibrant circle of friends and often enjoyed happy hours with them. Remarkably, she continued to drive until she was 102, and she was quite upset when her license was taken away. Always up for an adventure, her children fondly recall a night when fire trucks raced past their house. Mary turned off the stove, grabbed the kids, and followed the trucks to watch the excitement unfold.
Mary was deeply loved by her daughter, Nina Hutchinson (Rick), her son, Mark Veckman (Valerie), and her grandchildren, Matthew Veckman (Lanie), Megan Wilkinson (Scott), and Christopher Veckman. She also leaves behind five beautiful great-grandchildren: Will, Hayes, Luke, Avery, and Peyton. She is already greatly missed. A memorial service will be held on April 1st at 4 PM at St. Mark's Church in Palm Beach Gardens. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to St. Mark's Church or a charity of your choice.
