Mrs. Mary Ellen Ballew Verner, age 90, of Tallapoosa, GA, passed away peacefully in her home May 7, 2025. She was born January 10, 1935 in Haralson County, GA to the late Lonnie Ballew and Rosie Chaney Ballew. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Norris Glenn Verner; sisters, Mildred Bright and Elsie Smith; and brothers, Jack Ballew, Johnny Ballew, and Clarence Ballew.
Mary was a member of Mt. Zion West Baptist Church, where she joined at the age of 16. She worked as a seamstress for many years, retiring from Hubbard's when they closed. She loved to tend to her flowers and watch the hummingbirds from her front porch swing. She loved her family dearly and prayed for them often.
She is survived by her daughter and son in law, Starla and Steve VanWieren, of Woodstock, GA; sons and daughters in law, Glenn and Charlene Verner, Freddy and Kim Verner, and Robbye and Jessica Verner, all of Tallapoosa; ten grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; and sisters, Ruby Patterson, of Mableton, GA and Hazel McElroy, of Tallapoosa.
A graveside service will be held Friday, May 9, 2025 at 12:00PM in Hollywood Cemetery with Rev. Raymond Cash and Rev. Homer Wysner officiating. Music will be provided by Barbara Wysner. Those serving as pallbearers will be William Verner, Bryan Verner, Austin Verner, Aaron Verner, Logan Verner, Logan Chambers, and Kaytlyn Verner. Honorary pallbearers will be Scott Roberts, Donnie Ballew, Christopher Rhoades, Jimmy Pope, and David West. Interment will follow the service.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday evening from 5:00 to 8:00PM.
