Obituary published on Legacy.com by Downs Funeral Home - Superior on Dec. 31, 2025.
Mary "Peggy" M. Warring, 82, died Saturday, December 27, 2025, at Essentia St. Mary's Hospital in Superior, surrounded by her family.
Peggy was born February 11, 1943, in
Salem, Iowa, the daughter of George and Ruth (Nichols) James.
She married Richard "Dick" Warring on June 24, 1961, and together they celebrated 64 wonderful years of marriage.
Peggy's greatest joy was her family, and she was in her element taking care of them-whether they wanted it or not-until the very end. She was fiercely proud of her children and grandchildren and attended every sporting event, recital, or special occasion she could. She loved passing along her knowledge to her grandchildren, teaching them about stars, clouds, and four-leaf clovers. Her love language was food, keeping friends and family full with standbys like pierogies, meatballs and gravy, pistachio salad, and her famous homemade chicken noodle soup.
To know Peggy was to love her. She could make friends anywhere and was always visiting or hosting friends and family. She was also on a first-name basis with the staff at multiple local restaurants.
Peggy worked for many years as a custodian in the Superior School District, where she adopted countless students as bonus children and grandchildren. She also worked as a cake decorator at Billings Park Bakery and was a dedicated volunteer. Her service included the Red Hat Society, recognition by the Red Cross during the Benzene Spill, and the Essentia St. Mary's Superior Hospital Auxiliary, where she proudly managed the Koffe Knook.
She was a closet pack rat and would likely have been a hoarder if her family had let her, often accusing her youngest daughter of throwing away treasured possessions.
Peggy had a fervor for life and enjoyed it fully. She was an ardent supporter of the Milwaukee Brewers and Green Bay Packers, loved to travel, and was always up for an adventure. She had a sweet sense of humor, loved to laugh, and enjoyed a good-natured joke. Her family will always chuckle at the words "awesome" and "syrup."
She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, George, Robert, Betty, and Loretta.
Peggy is survived by her husband, Dick; children, Scott (Amy) Warring, Annette (Steve) Farmakes, Rick (Molly) Warring, Jodi (Matt) Kebhart, Chad (Heather) Warring, and Mindi (Mike) Childs; grandchildren, Nikky, Jon, Riese (Maddy), Mac, Suzie, Bailee, Myles, Roan, Evelyn, Noah, Shawn, Paradise, Bryn, Nolan, Maverick, and Ava; great-grandchildren, Xenia, Marceline, and Zeddicus; sisters, Ruth (Arne) Dalbec and Kathy Hesselgrave; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, adopted family, and friends.
Visitation will be held Saturday, January 17, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until the Noon Funeral Mass at St. Francis Xavier Church, 2316 E. 4th St., with Very Rev. Fr. James Tobolski as celebrant. Private family interment will take place at a later date in Summit Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Essentia St. Mary's Superior Auxiliary, 3500 Tower Ave., Superior.
The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the Essentia St. Mary's Superior staff for the love and respect shown to Peggy in her final moments.
