Mary J. (Maura) Witkowicz, 69, of Westport, Massachusetts, passed away after a brief illness on Thursday, April 13, 2023. Born in New Bedford, on May 31, 1953, she was the daughter of the late Mario and Deloures Maura. Mary was the beloved wife of the late Michael Witkowicz, who passed away in 2005. They were married for 31 years and shared a deep love for each other and a passion for their family.
Mary was an incredible baker and cook and enjoyed making special cakes and treats that family and friends looked forward to receiving. She had a passion for weather, ensuring she shared the latest updates on any hurricane, thunderstorm, or tornado that may be in the path of her loved ones. She owned and operated Miss Mary's School of Dance, in Downtown New Bedford, for over 20 years. Mary was loved by her students, who often brought their own children back to her studio to teach them to dance. She was recognized throughout her community fondly as a teacher, mentor, and friend.
She is survived by her son, Aaron Witkowicz and his wife Kimberly, of New Bedford; her daughter, Aimee Grajales of Westport; her siblings, Carol Vasconcellos and Kathy Bonas, both of New Bedford, Lynn Maura and her fiancé Joe Sousa of Acushnet, Mario Maura and his partner Jocelyne Manganaro of South Dartmouth, Coreen Sullivan of Fairhaven, and Carleen Lentini of Lakeville; four grandchildren, Noah Witkowicz, Abby Witkowicz, Zach Grajales, and Logan Grajales and his wife Kamryn; several nieces and nephews, and her former son-in law, Shawn Grajales, who loved and helped care for Mary for many years.
Her visitation will be held on Monday, April 17, 2023, from 4-7 PM at the Saunders Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Her committal prayers will be held on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, at 11 AM in the Chapel of St. John's Cemetery. For online condolence book, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
