GLOUCESTER - Maryann (Shermetaro) Lumbard, 92, of Gloucester, passed away Saturday morning, May 20, 2023 at Bearhill Rehabilitation Center in Stoneham. She was the wife of the late Gilbert E. Lumbard. Maryann was born in
Detroit, Michigan on January 9, 1931 and was the daughter of the late John and Grace (Locricchio) Shermetaro. Maryann came to Gloucester at age 14 and was a graduate of Gloucester High School with the class of 1947.
Maryann and her husband Gil owned and operated Jim's Variety in Salem for many years. She worked at New England Telephone Company as an Operator. Strong Leather Company and The Pressroom in Gloucester.
Maryann was a proud Sawyer Medal Recipient. Her true passion was being active. Whether it was baking and cooking for her family, especially her Grandchildren. She loved music and was her grandson's number one fan watching him perform live all over the state well, into her late eighties. She loved the New England Patriots and could explain a zone defense. She attended many Patriots preseason camps at Gillette Stadium with her companion of 19 years Rick Gonzalves Jr. She had impeccable taste, style and flair her entire life. She was truly one of a kind her entire life and will be missed dearly by her family and friends.
Surviving her are two daughters, Michelle Capello and Janelle L. Johnson both of Gloucester; four grandchildren, Zachary and Marika Johnson, Nicholas Capello and his fiancée Mara Goldberg and Alea Capello; her longtime devoted companion, Richard Gonsalves, Jr. of Gloucester; three sisters-in-law, Norma Ciaramitaro of FL, Barbara Lumbard of CT and Nancy Lumbard of Gloucester and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Gary M. Lumbard; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Joseph Shermetaro and his wife Carol and Paul Ciaramitaro, many sisters and brothers-in-law, Virginia Orlando and her husband Samuel, Lee Favalora and her husband Anthony, George Lumbard and his wife Gertrude, Muriel Feener and her husband Gene Feener, Richard Lumbard, Dorothy Williams and her husband Alvin and Carlton Lumbard.
Her funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Church (St. Ann Church), 74 Pleasant St., Gloucester, on Friday, May 26th at 11 AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial will be held privately.
