MaryAnn Morton Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Services - Niles on Dec. 4, 2025.
MaryAnn Morton, 78, passed away on Tuesday, November 25, 2025 in Dowagiac, Michigan.
MaryAnn was born on December 8, 1946 in Muskegon, Michigan to the late Calvin W. Smith and Helene E. (Rossell) Smith.
Left to cherish the memory of MaryAnn is her loving husband, Mark G. Morton; daughter, Tara (Anthony) Schaefer, and two grandchildren.
Known for her steady presence and practical nature, MaryAnn approached life the same way she approached her garden - by rolling up her sleeves, paying attention, and giving each person and plant exactly what they needed to grow.
MaryAnn had a scientific mind and an observant way of moving through the world. She understood that no two people learn in the same way, and she had an uncommon ability to read a situation, adjust her approach, and meet others where they were without judgment or expectation. This gift made her an exceptional teacher. For more than 30 years, MaryAnn dedicated her life to shaping young minds, proudly serving as a 1st- and 3rd-grade teacher at Kincheloe Elementary School. Her favorite moments were those when a child's face lit up with understanding - the quiet joy of seeing discovery spark into curiosity.
Outside the classroom, MaryAnn enjoyed gardening. She was a "get in there and get your hands dirty" type of person. Her garden and the family farm were places she loved to share. MaryAnn loved spending time with her grandchildren. She often took them on nature walks, shared simple picnics together and made frequent visits to the farm, where she enjoyed showing them the outdoors she cared so much about.
In keeping with MaryAnn's wishes, there will be no services held at this time.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Brown Funeral Home.
