Masako Shimizu passed away on July 11, 2025 in Chicago, at the age of 93. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, grand-aunt and friend of many. Born the youngest of 6 children, she was engaging and energetic, with an effervescent personality, who was fun to be around. She was also kind and generous, with an indominatable spirit.

She is survived by her children, Mary (Geof) and Sharon, grandson Gensen, sister-in-law Jane, niece Sandra, and relatives in Japan. She was predeceased by her husband Jiro and siblings Kazuko, Kikuko, Kayo, Kazuo and Toshihiko.

Masako was born and raised in Osaka, Japan. She was a teacher in Japan and Chicago, worked at the Chicago Shimpo newspaper and in the office of the Consul General of Japan in Chicago. She was also a devoted member of the Lakeside Church of Chicago.

She was a skilled and talented seamstress, who loved to sew, knit and embroider. She created beautiful crafts of many kinds, from paper crafts to stained glass. She was also talented at singing, and Japanese poetry, calligraphy and folk dance. She was an avid traveler, having traveled to many US states and foreign countries, including Japan, Mexico, Belgium and England.

Her celebration of life and visitation will take place from 2-7pm on Sunday, July 20, 2025 at the Lakeview Funeral Home, 1458 W. Belmont, Chicago Illinois 60657. The family invites friends and loved ones to join them in remembering Masako.
