Lance Corporal Mason J. Vanderwork, 21, of Jacksonville, NC and formerly of Hickory, passed away on Monday, March 18, 2013. Born April 28, 1991 in Jamestown, NY, he was the son of Melissa Vanderwork of Hickory, NC and Kevin Hallberg of Jamestown, NY. Lance Cpl. Vanderwork was in the U.S. Marine Corps, stationed at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, NC and a graduate of St. Stephens High School. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Taylor Vanderwork of Jacksonville, NC; sister, Katelyn McMahan of Hickory, NC; grandfather, Terry Vanderwork of Clymer, NY; grandparents: Cecil and Gloria Huffman of Taylorsville, NC; grandmother, Donna Morgan of Hickory, NC; uncle, Dawayne Vanderwork of Lakewood, NY; mother-in-law, Janet Molander-Foster of Hickory, NC; father-in-law, Mark Foster of Hickory, NC; two brother-in-laws: Bryant Molander of Dover, NH, Justin Molander of Ft. Carson, CO; and sister-in-law, Lindsey Foster of Hickory, NC. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 1, 2013 in the chapel at Bass-Smith Funeral Home in Hickory. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Full military honors will be performed by the United States Marine Corps. Memorials may be made in his honor to Marines Helping Marines, 512 Thorton Court, Myrtle Beach, SC 29579. Bass-Smith Funeral Home is serving the family of Lance Corporal Mason J. Vanderwork.
