Remembering Matthew K. Belitz: A Life of Love, Family, and Community
Matthew K. Belitz—devoted husband, father, son, brother, uncle, godfather, and friend—passed away on August 27, 2025, after a courageous battle with frontal temporal dementia. He was born on July 13, 1968, to George and Barbara Belitz and grew up in Norfolk, Nebraska. A 1986 graduate of Norfolk Catholic High School, Matt was active in sports, art, and theater.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in education with an emphasis in athletic training in 1991, a second bachelor’s in exercise science in 1992, and a master’s degree in physical therapy from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 1995. During his college years, he met the love of his life, Angie May. The couple married after his graduation and made their home in Lincoln, where they welcomed four children.
Matt began his physical therapy career at Nebraska Sports Injury and later worked at Bryan LGH before moving with his family to Neligh in 2006. There he became part owner of Overland Rehab, serving the community until 2019. He also volunteered as athletic trainer for the Neligh-Oakdale Warriors, where his commitment to athletes and students was deeply valued.
Above all, Matt treasured his family. He coached his children in baseball, soccer, basketball, and football, and proudly cheered on his daughter in dance. Camping and fishing trips created many of his family’s most cherished memories. He especially looked forward to the arrival of his first granddaughter.
Matt is survived by his wife, Angie; children, Tyson (Jaden), Cole, Garret, and Mallory; and his soon-to-arrive granddaughter. He is also survived by his in-laws, Steve and Carolyn May; brothers, Vic Belitz, Dan (Jenny) Belitz, and Tim Belitz with special friend Lisa Gallu; sister, Janna Pennington; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Chad and Kathleen Gustin; and sister-in-law, Heather May. Many nieces and nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
