Robert Peter "Bob" Belitz, Jr., age 71, passed away on August 12, 2025, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the city in which he resided. He was born on October 25, 1953, in Cherry Point, North Carolina, and was a 1971 graduate of Portage Central High School. Bob lived a life marked by creativity, curiosity, and an extraordinary ability to bring things to life with his hands and imagination.
Bob was the beloved son of June Taylor Belitz and the late Bob Belitz. He grew up in a large and vibrant family that included his siblings: Gale (Mick) Brooks, Paul (Patty Arscott) Belitz, Ellen Markus, John Belitz, Tim Belitz, Bill (Stacy Cox) Belitz, Donna Belitz, and Mary (Matt) Lisk. He was also cherished by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members.
A rare creative genius, Bob had an uncanny knack for fixing just about anything-a talent his mother used often when his dad was out-of-town. From a young age, he displayed a deep intellectual curiosity; it wasn't unusual to find him reading encyclopedias late into the night. That thirst for knowledge stayed with him throughout his life and fueled his many passions.
Bob was both artistic and meticulous. A devoted rockhound, he collected gems and minerals with care and transformed them into beautiful pieces of jewelry. His artistic talents were shared within the family-his sister Ellen also creates jewelry-and Bob often faceted or polished stones for her work. His attention to, and love for, natural beauty made each piece he crafted truly unique.
His fascination with flight was another defining interest. Though he preferred to keep his feet firmly on the ground, Bob channeled his love of aviation into model airplanes-each one a testament to his precision and creativity.
On February 14, 2001, Bob married Gerry Morford at the Dam Site Inn in Hell, Michigan-a fittingly whimsical location for a couple who appreciated both humor and originality.
Bob's legacy is one of ingenuity and artistry. Those who knew him will remember not only his skillful hands but also the thoughtful mind behind every creation. His presence will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched.
May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.
