Matthew Arnold Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, Memorial Park, and Crematory on Mar. 19, 2026.
Matthew Scott "Matt" Arnold, 44, of Tuscaloosa, passed away peacefully at his home on March 18, 2026. Graveside services will be at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, March 22, 2026, at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park.

Matt is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Caroline and Travis Railsback of Tuscaloosa; his nephews, Sam and Zach Railsback of Tuscaloosa; his brother and sister-in-law, Ben and Olivia Arnold of Northport; his niece and nephew, Addie and Luke Arnold of Northport; his sister, Abbie Arnold (Josh Montgomery) of Northport; his aunt, Carol Pennington of Bismarck, Arkansas, and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gary and Caroline Arnold of Enterprise.

Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on March 30, 1981, Matt was born into a military family. As the son of an Army aviator, he spent his childhood stationed in several locations, including Schofield Barracks in Hawaii, Fort Rucker in Alabama, and Fort Wainwright in Alaska. He attended Enterprise City Schools and formed lifelong bonds in each community he touched.

After the passing of his mother in 2008, Matt joined the Railsback family in Tuscaloosa. In their home, he embraced his role as "Uncle Matt" with joy, devotion, and lots of laughter. In his quiet, gentle way, he taught those around him countless lessons-about compassion, humility, patience, and the enduring strength of family. His warm presence, bright smile, and generous hugs were constants for those around him.

For more than 17 years, Matt attended the ARC of Tuscaloosa- "school," as he fondly called it. The ARC enriched his life through the dedicated care of its staff and the friendships he built there. Matt gave back generously to the Tuscaloosa community through volunteer work with Tuscaloosa Emergency Services, the Community Soup Bowl, Meals on Wheels, and Harvest Hands. He also shined as a longtime performer with the ARC's Sounds of Joy, bringing happiness to thousands across West Alabama.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the ARC of Tuscaloosa, Caring Days, or to any United Way of West Alabama agency that serves the community Matt loved and supported.

Matt's life was defined by kindness, joy, and an unwavering love for those around him. His legacy will continue in the lives he touched, the smiles he inspired, and the love he freely gave.
