Born and raised on Galveston Island, Texas, Matthew Ayala entered this world at John Sealy Hospital and peacefully passed at Jennie Sealy Hospital. He was baptized in the Gulf of Mexico, a place dear to his heart.
Matthew is survived by his loving parents, Mr. Robert and Agroda Ayala of Galveston, and his devoted and gracious wife, Elva Ayala. He was the youngest son and his father's faithful sidekick, sharing an unbreakable bond. He was preceded in death by his sister, Francis Ayala, and is survived by his brother, Chris Ayala, and sister-in-law, Elaine Ayala, of Dickinson, Texas.
Matthew was a wonderful father, protector, and leader to his children. He leaves behind his beloved daughter Marissa and son-in-law Rudy Rios Sr., his sons Richard Allen Jr. and Christopher Alvarado, and his daughter Maria Garcia. He was blessed with many grandchildren, including Luciano and Dominic Perez, Rudy Jr. and Little Matthew Rios, Malakai and Richard "TRE" Alvarado, Tony Delvalle, and his cherished granddaughters Mayah and Aleayah Alvarado, and Samantha Huerta. His precious granddaughter, Princess Sofia, now welcomes him home in Heaven.
One of Matthew's favorite places was his father's garage, where he would watch Houston Astros games or listen to classic rock and roll. Even in his final days, despite his pain, he longed to be beside his father, Bobby, his "best friend," in "the garage". He also loved fishing along 8-Mile Road, relaxing at "the acre" with a cold beer in hand, and spending quality time with his family. Sundays were especially meaningful, attending church with his grandchildren followed by breakfast at Gloria's or El Nopalito.
A lifelong Astros fan, Matthew was able to attend many games, thanks to his son Chris. He cherished family barbecues, a good game of dominoes, and countless moments of laughter and joy with those he loved. His lifelong best friend, Paul Rendon, honors him today as a pallbearer - a loyal companion to the very end.
Matthew was a fighter, a true "cancer-kicking champ" in the eyes of his family, friends, and the community of Galveston Island's Dvita Dialysis. The family is deeply grateful to the staff, nurses, and physicians who cared for him during his many years battling diabetes and colon cancer. Special thanks are also extended to his sister-in-law Rebecca Romero and to Jessica Sendejas for singing praise and worship in the evening before he passed, to his mother-in-law (he always wanted to visit mom while watching the Astros), as well as to all extended family for their donations, support, and prayers. But most of all we are thankful to God for bringing Matthew into our lives.
Above all, Matthew was a devoted father and grandfather, leading his family with faith, love, and unwavering support. He worshipped at New Generation Church of Galveston under the guidance of Pastors AJ and Pauline Larson. Matthew left this world with Jesus in his heart and a spirit at peace. Matthew often joked that "God's favorite children come from Galveston"- Matthew is God's favorite child, just not the only one.
His legacy will live on in the sands of Galveston and in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
