Matthew "Bernie" Bernhardt
Born in Towson, Maryland, he was the beloved son of Trey and Jo-z Bernhardt and the cherished grandson of Skip Dugdale; the late Elma Dugdale; and Carl and Velda Bernhardt. He was a loving twin brother to Morada Bernhardt, who meant the world to him.
Known to everyone as "Bernie," he had an infectious spirit and a gift for friendship. He deeply loved his large group of friends and valued the bonds he shared with them, always showing up with loyalty, humor, and heart.
A passionate golfer, he spent countless hours playing at Hunt Valley Country Club, where his strong work ethic and competitive nature were always on display. He was part of the Loyola Blakefield golf team in high school and played in the Under Armour Tour as well. At the end of his senior year he decided he was going to go to the University of Delaware, where his father also went to college.
At UD, Matthew pledged coming in as a freshman to be apart of Phi Kappa Tau. He was very involved in his fraternity where he became apart of an even bigger brotherhood. Matthew was excited to be apart of the social committee and was eager to help plan future events for his fraternity. As a student he was committed to putting in the time to get the grades he wanted and when he came home for winter break, he was excited to say he finished this semester with a 4.0.
Bernie was hardworking, determined, and took pride in everything he did. He enjoyed working alongside his father at the family-owned business, Captain Trey's, where he learned the value of dedication, teamwork, and family. He lived life fully, with passion, drive, and love, and left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be forever remembered for his kind heart, strong spirit, and the love he gave so freely to his family and friends.
Family and friends will honor and celebrate Matthew's life at the family-owned Evans Life Celebration Home – 16924 York Road, Monkton MD, 21111, for a visitation on Sunday, December 28th, 2025, from 2-4pm and 6-8pm. A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 29th, 2025, 11am at Evans Monkton. Interment will conclude services at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens.
