Matthew Carrier Obituary

Published by Legacy on Aug. 2, 2024.
Matthew Paul Carrier, 32, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, July 26 in the home he shared with his fiancée, Katie.
The son of Donald H. Carrier and Donna M. Carrier (Shannon), Matthew was born on June 19, 1992 in Kalamazoo, Mich. Matthew attended St. Mary's Catholic School in Kalamazoo before attending and graduating from Plainwell Community Schools in 2010. A natural athlete, Matthew excelled in sports throughout his life, and he had a genuine love of all athletic events.
After high school, Matthew briefly attended Kalamazoo Valley College before choosing to pursue his career with Consumers Energy.
In 2018, Matthew met the love of his life, Katie A. Domke; and the two shared years of adventure, laughter, concerts and the everyday, small elements of life that bring us such joy. Matthew asked Katie to marry him in 2023 while the two were traveling to England and Scotland – a part of the world special to his Katie. The two were to be married on October 19, 2024 in Ferndale, Mich.
Matthew – adoringly known as Matty to his family – will leave a massive hole in the hearts of everyone who knew him. Matthew noticed the little things – the silly things about his nieces and nephews, the often-overlooked jokes made in passing, the less popular songs on an album, and the beauty found in both the smallest and greatest elements of life. He loved his family fiercely.
What a privilege it is to have known him and call him partner, son, brother, Uncle Matt and dearest friend.
Matthew is preceded in death by his grandparents James and Patricia Shannon; Margaret and Cliff Cosby; Harold and Ruth Carrier; and his uncle, Patrick Shannon. Matthew is survived by his fiancée, Katie Domke; his parents, Donald and Donna Carrier; his siblings Shannon Cunningham (Ethan), Timothy Carrier (Michael Dezsi), Kelly Carrier-Cutler (Ethan); and his four nieces and three nephews.
Matthew was cremated on Tuesday, July 30 in Royal Oak, Mich. His family will honor his life during a Mass at St. Joseph Parish, 936 Lake Street in Kalamazoo, on Friday, August 9 at 11 a.m. Prior to the Mass, the family will receive visitors at St. Joseph Parish at 10 a.m, and welcome all to a celebration at Old Dog Tavern in Downtown Kalamazoo immediately following the funeral.
In lieu of flowers, Matthew's family asks that you consider a contribution to a hosted GoFundMe, which will solely benefit Matthew's fiancée, Katie: www.gofundme.com/f/matthewcarrier.

I first got to know Matthew (Matt) during youth football where I helped coach the team he played on. Matt wasn't the biggest kid physically, but he was tough and athletic. Quiet and unassuming, whatever was asked of him, he would do without hesitation. On more than one occasion, I would offer the team the chance to end practice early and without wind sprints if Matt could catch a pass I threw. Without expressing himself verbally, he made it clear that he was up to the challenge. So I sent him running and once he was about 30-yards away I would heave the ball in his direction. He caught it every time...even laying out and crashing to the ground with ball in his hands. I'm pretty sure every kid on the team had little doubt that Matt would come through for them. I got to know Matt much better as years progressed as he and my son Harry became close friends. The two of them made quite a pair as Harry was the large and gregarious one and Matt was the smaller, quieter side kick who mostly communicated with facial expressions. The two were drawn to each other with commonalities like genuine kindness, respect, sports, and concern for others. It was a delight to see them together. The three of us went to Chicago for a weekend to see a Cubs game and sample the cities culinary offerings where we had a lot of fun and many great memories were created. Matt was just a wonderful human being that I feel so privileged to have known and spend time with. From the times with our family (where my daughters got Matt and Harry to participate in their home made videos) to all the sports I got to coach him in, I can safely say I have never met a kinder, more genuine person. I'm convinced more now than ever that certain people are not meant to be here that long. That the impression they make on us and the legacy they create is not a result of longevity. It comes from a place of unconditional love that provides us with a sample of how wonderful life can be, and how fortunate we are to have each other. I have this vision of Matt and Harry together again, smiling, laughing, having fun, and wondering why it's taking so long for the rest of us to figure it out. I'll never forget Matt Carrier.
