Matthew Currey, age 55, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 3rd 2024, in the arms of his devoted wife and holding his loving son’s hand. He is now at rest after battling esophageal cancer these last 17 months. Matthew was born on December 14th 1968, in Syracuse, New York, to Lana Clawson and David Currey III. Matthew was an accomplished athlete who excelled in swimming, cycling, snowboarding and trail running. He graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder with bachelor’s degrees in English and Fine Art.
The Taos community will remember him as the director and executive chef at Holy Cross Hospital for 12 years. Chef Matt brightened everyone’s day when they entered Wheeler Peak Cafe. You would often hear him singing to his crew as they turned out lunch service to an eager crowd of healthcare workers and community members. Matthew had a passion for service and he made sure you felt it. Matthew lived a life full of joy, kindness and adventure. He was always the life of the party, making jokes and leading friends in rounds of endless late-night karaoke. But most of all, Matthew took pride in raising his son, Benjamin. Matthew always cheered the loudest from the sidelines of Ben’s many baseball, soccer and hockey games. Matthew was always there for his son and loved him more than anything.
Matthew is survived by his wife and love of his life, Barbriana Trujillo, his son, Benjamin Currey and stepson, Ian Robbins. He is also survived by his parents Lana and Bill Clawson, his older brother and sister-in-law, David and Vonya Currey, with their three children Bryce, Amanda and Abby. His Aunt, Donna Currey, along with her daughter, Jennifer Currey and grandson, Dhimani Hernandez.
Memorial services will be announced at a later date.
The family of Matthew Currey has entrusted the care of their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home of Taos. 866-657-4019 www.devargastaos.com
