Obituary
Matthew Lloyd Funk
January 5, 1963 – January 16, 2025
Matthew Lloyd Funk, 62, of Thermopolis Wyoming, passed away on January 16, 2025. He was born on January 5, 1963, to Merle Marvin and Darlene Mae (DeSotel) Funk in Allamakee, Iowa.
At the age of 15, Matt moved to the Wyoming State Training School in Lander, Wyoming, where he graduated at 21. Although Matt faced the challenges of special needs, he was an inspiration to all who knew him. His kind heart, cheerful spirit, and love for life were evident to everyone he encountered. He found great joy in simple things like camping, playing games, and, most notably, sharing his infectious smile and contagious laugh with everyone around him.
In 1994, Matt moved to Big Horn Enterprises (BHE) in Thermopolis, Wyoming, where he lived and worked for the remainder of his life. While at BHE, he participated in many Special Olympics events, demonstrating persistence, joy, and a true sense of sportsmanship. He loved being part of the community at BHE and made deep friendships with both staff and fellow residents. Despite the challenges he faced, Matt always brought warmth and positivity to his work and his relationships, teaching others about the power of kindness and the value of friendship.
Matt's love for babies and puppies was well-known-his gentle nature made him a beloved presence in the lives of those around him. He had a unique ability to make people feel seen and appreciated, and his laughter could brighten even the toughest of days. He was a constant reminder that love, joy, and acceptance are not defined by ability, but by the heart.
Matt is survived by his sister, Marlene Sires; his nephews, Max and Sam Funk, and Anthony and Andy Sears. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Mark Funk.
A celebration of life will be held at Big Horn Enterprises in Thermopolis on February 18, 2025 at 1:00 PM with an interment in Ten Sleep, Wyoming next to his parents and brother on February 19, 2025 at 11:00 AM. Online condolences may be made at www.bryantfuneralhomeonline.com.
