Dr. Matthew Godlewski, a beloved husband, devoted father, proud grandfather, and compassionate physician, passed away on May 30 at the age of 78 with his loving wife of 51 years by his side.
Born in Poland under the shadow of communism, Matthew and his brother, Bogdon Godlewski, courageously left their homeland in 1972. With little more than determination and a deep belief in the promise of the American dream. After arriving in Michigan, Matthew trained in the Great Lakes region, where he met his future wife, Amber Rose Tortomose, a nurse. After completing his training, he and Amber moved to Houston, Tx for a year before settling in West Virginia. There he practiced his specialty of Nephrology for over 30 years, building a thriving practice and directing two dialysis centers.
Matthew dedicated his life to healing. As a nephrologist, he treated his patients with exceptional care, empathy, and expertise. Known for his fiery personality, he was also known for his deep medical knowledge and compassion towards his patients, always striving to do his absolute best. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Amber Rose (Tortomose), two sons, Dr. Tomek Godlewski (Krissy) and Dr. Brett Godlewski, and two grandchildren, Ellora and Arek.
May his memory be a blessing. His legacy lives on through the lives he touched in both his personal and professional life. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church, located at 21100 Madison St, St. Clair Shores, MI 48081. Dr. Godlewski will lie In State at 10:00 AM, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM.
