Matthew Francis Howard

It is with deep sorrow and humble acceptance of God's will that we announce the passing of Matthew Francis Howard.

Matt was born on April 28, 1961, in Jefferson City, Missouri, to Charles Homer Howard and Patricia Ann (Coins) Howard.

He graduated from Jefferson City High School in 1979 and continued his education at CMSU, graduating in 1982. He later earned his law degree from the University of Missouri School of Law in 1985, beginning a career that would allow him to faithfully serve his community for many years.

Matt started practicing law in private practice with his partners Oswald & Seek and later went on to his own independent practice. He also served as Miller County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for many years before serving as Miller County Prosecuting Attorney from 2002 to 2014 and again from 2022 to 2026.

On June 20, 1987, he married the love of his life, Suzanne Barbour, in Eldon, Missouri. Together they built a life rooted in faith, family, and service. Matt was a devoted member of Bethany Lutheran Church, where he served as an elder and church president. He was also his wife's biggest supporter, especially in her role as organist and choir director.

Matt's deep Christian faith guided every part of his life. It showed in the way he loved and raised his sons, in his tireless work ethic, and in the strong, lasting friendships he cherished. He was a loyal and steady presence to all who knew him - a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.

He is survived by his wife, Suzanne Howard of Eldon, MO; his son Ben (Rochelle) Howard and grandchildren Everett and Charlie Howard of New Haven, MO; his son Andy Howard of Jefferson City, MO; his brothers Tom (Joan) Howard of Washington, MO and Jim (Valerie) Howard of Roseville, CA; his nephews Brad (Allie) Howard and Phil (Lindsey) Howard; and his niece Jennifer (Karl) Howard.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Patricia Howard, and his sister-in-law, Bobby Howard.

Visitation will be Saturday, April 4, 2026 from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM at Bethany Lutheran Church of Eldon, MO with the Funeral Service beginning at 3:00 PM with Pastor Peter Lange officiating. Burial will follow at the Eldon City Cemetery.

In Lieu of Flowers, Memorials in his name are suggested to Bethany Lutheran Church.
