Obituary published on Legacy.com by Beinhauer Family Funeral Homes - Peters Township - McMurray on Jun. 30, 2024.
Age 51, of Mount Lebanon, passed away on June 24, 2024.
Matt was born on June 3, 1973, in Manassas, VA to Timothy Ard Hoyt and Phyllis Deborah Hoyt, the third of five children.
From a young age, Matt developed a meticulous attention to detail, a love of technology, and an appreciation for cinematography and music that motivated and inspired him throughout his life. His love specifically of Apple products started at age eleven when he first saw the Macintosh in 1984 through the Micro Center shopping window at Lane Avenue in Ohio. He constantly reminisced about receiving an underwhelming and disappointing Commodore 64 instead of the beloved Macintosh for Christmas. Since then it has been his mission to collect, restore & put to use every iconic Apple product made since the 1984 Macintosh's debut. Matt talked about this passion so often that Lillian challenged him to NOT bring up Apple or Steve Jobs during date night. He succeeded maybe 10% of the time.
Matt's desire for nostalgia also extended to his childhood music such as U2, the Police, and Hall & Oates and also new passions like Radiohead & Jamiroquai. He and his siblings would reminisce during their "Friday 80s Music" group chat and share music they resonated with in their youth. As a guitarist since childhood, every breath he took and every move he made was part of his process in recreating the spirit of his favorite guitarist. When Lillian took him to see U2 in concert, he would lean over and whisper to her, "Edge is bringing out X guitar. That means X song is next." To say he loved Edge's guitar skills was an understatement.
Whenever Matt wasn't spending his time working on his Apple products, he was mastering his knowledge in videography and production. He founded Cinefit, Inc., a professional cinema equipment rental company out of his fascination with capturing the essence of movie magic. He had a passion for Arri cameras and Cooke lenses that took him and Lillian on a tour of the Cooke factory in Leicester, England.
Matt was a deeply spiritual man who did his best to live the principles of his religion. As a young man, Matt paused his life to learn Spanish and serve a mission in Santiago, Chile for his church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, from 1998-2000. The trip was life-changing.
As an adult, Matt often spoke about his faith and how it sustained him through both the good and hard times in life. Over the years, he served his local church congregation in multiple voluntary capacities, with his favorite roles being those that involved teaching scripture and the tenets of his faith to the next generation. He loved teaching children on Sundays as a Primary teacher, and teaching teens in the early mornings before school as a Seminary teacher.
On his mission, Matt met his wife of 22 years, Lillian. Together, they had four beautiful children. After pursuing career opportunities in Manhattan and Connecticut, they ultimately landed in
Pittsburgh, PA. Matt loved Pittsburgh. He loved his short commute, the relatively affordable cost of living, the family-centered culture of the area, their supportive community, and his simple house on a quiet street.
Professionally, Matt completed a Master's of Accounting (MAcc) at Brigham Young University in 2006. One of his professors nominated him for the Postgraduate Technical Assistant Program with the Financial Accounting Standards Board, which took them from the west to the east side of the country. This was followed by roles as a Senior Associate at KPMG LLP and Associate Director at UBS Investment Bank, before ultimately working as a Senior Accounting Manager - Accounting Policy for PNC. His love of computer programming eventually led him to pursue a second Master's of Computer and Information Technology, Computer Science from the University of Pennsylvania starting in 2022. He was working towards this degree at the time of his passing.
A self-declared introvert, Matt was a kind and sensitive man who openly shared his feelings with those lucky enough to know him. He was down-to-earth, authentic, and open about his hopes as well as his struggles.
Matt's biggest passion in life was his family. He loved being at home with his 4 kids, often making silly (aka dumb) songs for the children. He was exceptionally supportive to his wife, encouraging and supporting her hobbies and professional interests both verbally and in action, effortlessly taking his share of the housework and childcare.
Matt is predeceased by his father Timothy Ard Hoyt. He is survived by his mother Phyllis Deborah Hoyt; his devoted wife, Lillian Hoyt; his adoring children, Jackson (18), Elise (15), Andrew (12), and Charlotte (8); and his loving siblings, Brooke (Jason) Mayhall, Jason (Kjerstin) Hoyt, BJ Hoyt, and Shannon (Tim) Dickman.
Matt will be dearly missed.
