Matthew M. Johnston, 31, formerly of Hopewell Township, died unexpectedly on May 30, 2024, in Chicago, Illinois where he was currently residing.
Matt's academic journey was marked by his dedication and natural leadership. As an honor student of Hopewell Area High School, he set a standard of excellence early on. His commitment to academics and community was further highlighted by his role as a member and past president of the National Honor Society. Matt's thirst for knowledge and passion for innovation led him to Penn State University, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Petroleum Engineering and a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering. At the time of his passing, he was furthering his education at Northwestern University, where he was studying for his MBA degree.
Beyond his academic achievements, Matt had a lifelong passion for baseball. Whether playing on the field or cheering from the stands, his love for the game was evident to all who knew him.
Matt's legacy is carried on through his beloved parents, Michael and Diane (Martin) Johnston of Brighton Township, his brother Logan Johnston, and numerous extended family members who deeply feel his absence.
Matt's sudden departure leaves a void in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Rest in peace, Matthew M. Johnston. Your spirit and legacy will endure in the hearts and minds of those you've left behind.
A memorial visitation will take place on Tuesday, June 4th from 5 – 7 pm at SIMPSON FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES, 1119 Washington Avenue, Monaca, PA.

I met Matt through his freshman roommate, & my best friend, Xavier, when visiting him at Penn State. Having been raised in a Penn State family (though not attending myself), from the first day I met him, Matt always embodied Penn State through his energy and social connections with others & work ethic to succeed. My other childhood buddies & I visited Xavier for 5 years straight at Penn State to attend football games, tailgates & to hang out at his friend´s awesome 3rd story balcony apartment on College Ave.

What cracked us up every year is how Matt ("Johnston") would always end up showing up, even if there was no plan or communication made. It was like the "bat signal" was shown in the sky whenever we came in to visit. Matt always made the time to re-connect to share in what were some of the best Saturdays my friends & I will always cherish.

May Matt rest peacefully & I pray that the Lord may bring comfort to the Johnston family during this extremely difficult time.
