Matthew Lyons Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Dahlstrom Funeral Home - Oakes on Jan. 21, 2026.
Matthew Franklin Lyons was born September 19, 1974 in Lisbon, ND to Franklin and Connie (Hoff) Lyons. Matthew graduated from Lisbon High School where he participated in football, wrestling and FFA. He was an offensive lineman on the 1992 Bronco State Champion football team. He attended NDSCS and graduated with an associate degree in agribusiness in 1995. Matthew then returned to Lisbon and worked for Cenex for a short time before joining the family farm alongside his dad and brother.

Matthew married Sara Madsen on May 19, 2001 in Lisbon. They raised their four children while Matthew continued to farm. His children were his greatest accomplishment and the love and pride he had for each of them shone through in everything he did.

Matthew was a member of St Aloysius Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He served on the Ransom County Farmers Union board, the Lisbon Rural Fire Protection District and was President of the Lisbon Wrestling Club. He was also a supervisor for Casey Township. In addition to farming, Matthew drove bus for Lisbon Public Schools. He was a favorite bus driver to many and cherished the time he spent driving kids to school and activities.

No one was a stranger for long if Matt was around. He could strike up a conversation with anyone and would always find someone to visit with and something to talk about. He was a kind and selfless man who would do anything he could to help someone in need. He instilled that servant heart in his children along with a strong work ethic, devotion to the land, and faith in God. His legacy will live on through his children and the many lives he touched during his time on earth.

Surviving Matthew are his wife Sara, children Zachary (Mattison) Ulmer, Lydia (Zack) Nord, Gabriel and Eli, and grandson Theodore; mother Connie Lyons and parents-in-law Bruce and Mary Madsen; brother Darrin (Amy) and sisters-in-law Lisa and Miranda Madsen; niece Elizabeth, nephews Ethan, Grant, and Brock Lyons and Jack Morris; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Franklin Lyons and sister, Michelle Lyons.

Matthew passed away on Tuesday, January 20, 2026 at CHI Lisbon Health in Lisbon, ND at the age of 51.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 25, 2026 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. followed by the prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Lisbon. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, January 26, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Aloysius Catholic Church followed by burial at St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery near Lisbon. Matthew's service will be live streamed below.

In Lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the Lisbon Wrestling Club, Lisbon FFA, Ransom County 4H, or the Lisbon Rural Fire Protection District.
