Matthew Austin Mitchell

Matt Mitchell, age 33, of Marion, IL, passed away suddenly in the early morning hours of August 11, 2025. He was born January 26, 1992.

He survived by his loving mother, Geraldine Joiner, and stepfather, William Joiner, of Elizabethtown; his Aunt June and Uncle Dan Morris of Carterville, with whom he shared many cherished adventures and loved them deeply; his sister, Misty Taylor, and her husband, Dustyn, and their children, Dylan and Laynie, of Marion; his twin brother, Micheal Mitchell, and his wife, Jessica, and their children, Harrison and Alice, of Creal Springs; his half-siblings, Tausha, Amber, and Jeremiah; step-brother, Wyatt Hall, and his wife, Hunter, of Elizabethtown; step-brother, James Joiner, and his wife, Janelle, of McLeansboro; step-sister, Angelica Joiner of Carbondale; friends that were more like siblings, Eric, Erica, Stephen and Stephanie. Matthew leaves behind countless other aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who loved him deeply.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; and his father, Jerry L. Mitchell.

A proud 2010 graduate of Marion High School, Matthew was a talented athlete who excelled in multiple sports. He had a passion for the outdoors-hunting in North Dakota with his uncle Dan, fishing, golfing with his twin brother and camping at Crab Orchard Lake since he was young.

Matthew dedicated himself to his career at Terral River Service for over a decade, starting as a deckhand and working his way up to captain. He was known as a true "river rat." He loved life on the water and took great pride in his work. Matthew's presence lit up every room with his smile and contagious laugh. He was cherished by so many and he will forever be missed.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, 900 North Court Street, Marion, IL.

The visitation will be at Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home on Friday, August 15, 2025 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

The funeral service will be at the funeral home on Saturday, August 16, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Charlie Belt presiding.

For those who prefer, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions be directed to the family. Checks may be made payable to "Geraldine Joiner."
