Matthew Francis Popp

1971 – 2025

Loving husband, devoted father, principled lawyer, and a loyal friend.

Born in Dayton, Ohio, on March 24, 1971, Matt was one of four sons born to Nancy Horton Popp and the late August Popp.

He is survived by his loving wife, Kendra Couvillion, and his beloved children, Isabelle and Joshua. He is also survived by his three brothers, Christopher (Gena), Patrick (Michelle), and Andrew (Jessica). Matt was loved and will be missed by his many nieces and nephews, to whom he was a hero.

Matt attended Archbishop Alter High School in Kettering, Ohio, where he excelled academically and athletically. A dozen universities offered him scholarships, and he chose to attend Tulane University. There, he studied business and accounting and was a member of the Tulane Men's Basketball team from 1989-1993. Famous for his rough style of play and protecting his teammates, Matt was named team captain. He was at the center of the resurgence of men's basketball at Tulane and a crowd favorite. By his senior year, the program had achieved nationwide recognition and played in the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history. That team was inducted into the Tulane Athletic Hall of Fame in 2020.

After completing his undergraduate work, Matt received a scholarship to attend Tulane Law School, where he earned his Juris Doctor degree. Upon graduation, he worked as an Assistant District Attorney for Orleans Parish, prosecuting "the bad guys." He delighted in putting criminals in jail and taking them off the streets.

After years as a prosecutor, Matt transitioned to civil law, specializing in admiralty, maritime, and personal injury defense. He became licensed to practice in the United States Supreme Court, the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Second, Fifth, and Eleventh circuits, and numerous U.S. District Courts across Louisiana, New York, Florida, Texas, and Oklahoma. Matt's reputation was built not only on his skill as a trial lawyer but on his unwavering integrity and respect for others. He was a seasoned and successful trial lawyer who earned the respect of other lawyers and judges, particularly in the Eastern District of Louisiana, where he practiced often.

Matt Popp will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, at Greenwood Funeral Home, 5200 Canal Blvd., New Orleans, LA 70124, followed by a mass at 3:00 pm.
