Matthew Shilling Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Craddock Funeral Home on Mar. 9, 2026.
Funeral services for Matthew Hawley Shilling will be at 1:00 pm Friday, March 13, 2026, in the Craddock Memorial Chapel with Dr. David Daniel officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery with David Shilling, Allen Knippers, Rob Waybright, Brent Roady, Joe Phillips, and B. J. Bostick assisting as pallbearers.

Matthew was born Monday May 31, 1982, in Ardmore, Oklahoma to Tom and Revonda (Hawley) Shilling and passed away Sunday March 8, 2026, in Mustang, Oklahoma at the age of 43 years, 9 months and 8 days.

Matthew was Valedictorian of the Plainview High School Class of 2000. He was a National Merit Scholar and honored as an Academic All-Stater. He continued his education and graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 2004 with bachelor's in computer science. After college he worked as a software developer in the transaction processing and aviation industries. As a technology enthusiast, he enjoyed programming even outside of work, building homemade audio devices, 3-D printing, and video games. He was generous with his affinity for technology and regularly helped friends and family with all sorts of tech issues. Matthew was at his best tackling difficult, complex problems that required an extreme depth of analysis to complete. He would seek out such problems on his own, whether at work or as a hobby. Once he had an interesting, difficult problem to work on, Matthew was unable to let go of it and relentlessly pursued a solution. He enjoyed playing card and board games with his close friends and took pride in chaining together complicated plays that stretched the rulebooks to the limit.

Matthew was an avid reader, including fantasy and science fiction, non-fiction history and autobiographies, and classic literature. He made a point to schedule times to read during his day, and his disciplined approach helped him read multiple books simultaneously. He enjoyed particularly dense works that necessitated copious notes, dictionaries, and references to fully appreciate. He possessed a quick wit and knack for clever catchphrases and wordplay. However, he often abused this talent to create terrible puns, to his delight and to the groans of his friends and family.

Matthew listened to music, but particularly enjoyed repeated listens to fully pick out and appreciate all aspects of songs and albums. He also enjoyed listening to specific artists' work in chronological order to understand the artists' changing styles. He enjoyed drawing pictures of characters, action sequences, and landscapes on his tablet. His favorite sports teams to root for were the Oklahoma Sooners and San Antonio Spurs.

Matthew was preceded in death by his grandparents, Kenneth Shilling, Elizabeth Shilling, and Harlene Hawley. He is survived by his parents, Tom and Revonda Shilling, brother, David Shilling, and grandfather, Ortrey Hawley.
