Matthew G. Smith, residing in South Bend, IN, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, July 21, 2025.
He was born on September 28, 1973 in New London, CT - The son of Jeffrey and Nancy Lee Smith, both of whom survive him.
Matthew served his country and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Through his years in the service and in his professional career, he was able to see most of the U.S. The only exception to visiting all 50 states was Hawaii.
He was a well-read student of history on many subjects, among his favorites being ancient Rome, the Civil War and Napoleons campaigns. He enjoyed games of strategy and was a skilled chess player.
He made time for family, visiting when his work schedule allowed, some of his fondest memories included taking his daughters to the Disney theme parks when they were little and enjoying their excitement.
He was a kind, patient and loving husband, truly caring and supportive, a man you could depend upon.
In addition to his grandparents Robert and Evelyn Smith, and Joe and Donna Baxley, Matthew was preceded in death by his brother Joshua.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his beloved wife of three years, Lucy P. Smith, two daughters, Victoria (Jefferson) Egan and Evelyn Smith. His parents Jeffrey and Nancy Lee Smith, brothers Brad (Laura) and Peter (Michele) Smith along with many other loved ones including Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and Nieces.
No services will be held at this time. A celebration of Matthew's life will be held back East at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that contributions honoring Matthew be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
