Matthew Triolo Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Torkelson Funeral Home of Tomah on Mar. 2, 2024.
Matthew A. Triolo (Chips) age 76, of Wausau, Wisconsin went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was a courageous fighter who battled ALS until his passing on Wednesday, February 21, 2024. Matt passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones at the Tomah VA Medical Center. Born to Salvatore and Eleanor (Newman) Triolo in the heart of Brooklyn, New York, on November 17, 1947, Matt's journey was one of unwavering dedication and love.
He started his career on the streets of Brooklyn and served with the New York Police Department honorably for ten and a half years. Matt also taught Police Science at Northcentral Technical College in Marathon County. Later, he worked as a special investigator for the District Attorney's office until his retirement. Matt was a proud Vietnam veteran, and he served in the United States Marine Corps with his brothers in arms from 1967-1969. One of his most cherished experiences was the Never Forgotten Honor Flight which brought him together with fellow veterans and surrounded him with the spirit of boundless gratitude.
In July of 1981, he came to Wausau to visit his lifelong friend, Roger Jamgochian. It was during this visit that he met Deborah L. Degner and the three words he spoke, "I love you," felt like the perfect beginning to a love story waiting to unfold. They have been together for 43 years and have two children and one beautiful grandson named Mateo.
Matt loved spending time at Springstead Lake Lodge, where he would often admire the beautiful sunsets while enjoying a Bloody Mary and listening to oldies music. He enjoyed relaxing at his cabin on Ess Lake with the sound of loons echoing in the distance. He often said, "This is the true Northwoods, it doesn't get any better than this."
Deb's delicious Italian cooking was always a treat for Matt, especially her homemade rice balls. The whole family enjoyed the aroma of Mr. Triolo's freshly baked quiche, which was one of his specialties.
Matt was a man who had a contagious laugh, an infectious smile, and a great love for life. He was an inspiration to many due to his passion for staying active and healthy. Matt loved to snowshoe on a trail that he and his wife had created near their cabin, and he also took pleasure in biking alone in the Northwoods. He was a regular at the Wausau YMCA where he enjoyed spending time with friends. Matt was an accomplished triathlete, participating in numerous events well into his 70s. He won several medals and awards in these events, and he will always be remembered as a true legend.
Matt is survived by his wife, Deborah Triolo, as well as their children, Matt Triolo (Rosa Triolo) and Jennifer Triolo (Casey Wyssbrod), and grandchild, Mateo Triolo. He is also survived by his sister, Eleanor Condy (Bill Condy), his brother, Charlie Triolo (Angela Triolo), his nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother Eleanor (Newman) Triolo and father Salvatore Triolo.
A Celebration of Matt's Life will be held at a later date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The ALS Association and Tomah VA Medical Center.
