Mattie Wease (Josey) Jernigan, 78, of Weaver, Alabama, passed away on July 14,
2025. She was born on March 9, 1947, in Frisco City, Alabama.
Mattie was preceded in death by her husband, James Bertram Jernigan.
Mattie was a devoted homemaker who dedicated her life to caring for her family. Her
home was a place of warmth, love, and kindness, and she found deep joy in creating a
nurturing environment for those she loved.
She is survived by her son, Mark Jernigan; Elizabeth; and her granddaughter, Zoe
McKnight, along with Zoe's fiancé, Chance Jarvis, the father of her great-grandchildren,
Everly and Dwight Jarvis. She is also survived by her step-granddaughter Sarah
Feldman and husband Eric, and their child, Callan Feldman; as well as step-grandson
Ian Wroth and his son, Damian Wroth.
She had a deep appreciation for nature and loved spending time outdoors. She enjoyed
going out to eat, coloring, cooking, and collecting books. A lifelong reader, Mattie found
joy and enrichment in literature and learning. She attended church regularly with her
neighbors, Josh and Lacey McKnight, and their three children, Lincoln, Caroline and
Sheperd, and found lasting friendship and fulfillment through shared activities with her
neighbors, Robert and Sharon Levins.
A woman of faith, Mattie was a Christian and a member of the Southern Baptist
tradition. Her belief in God was a constant source of strength and peace throughout her
life.
In accordance with her wishes, Mattie's cremated remains will be combined with those
of her husband, James, and their beloved pet. Together, their ashes will be spread over
the beautiful Tallulah Gorge in Georgia. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later
date.
Mattie will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
