COOKEVILLE CHAPEL - James "Jim" C. Jernigan, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend and church member, passed away on July 17, 2025, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Born on September 26, 1949, in Monterey, TN, Jim was a proud graduate of Monterey High School, Class of 1967. He lived a life full of purpose and commitment, marked by his service in the United States Army as a Vietnam Veteran.

Jim was a self-employed highly skilled carpenter, demonstrating incredible craftsmanship in every project he undertook. Later, he dedicated 14 years of his career to the former Cookeville Housing Authority, now known as Highland Residential Services, where he contributed significantly to the lives of many families.

Jim's life was characterized by his nurturing spirit and unwavering support for those around him. He was a phenomenal father and provider, deeply devoted to his wife of 52 years, Sandra Jernigan. Together they forged a strong family bond that will continue to thrive through their two sons, Stacy (Michelle) Jernigan of Decatur and Jason (Kirstie) Jernigan of Cookeville. His grandchildren - Clay (Macy) Jernigan, Lance, Cynthia, Ashley Jernigan were the pride and joy of his life, and he cherished his role as a great-grandfather to Dani and Dallas Jernigan.

A man of many interests, Jim enjoyed gardening, often sharing the fruits of his labor with family and friends. His green thumb brought everyone together as he delighted in their enjoyment of fresh fruits and vegetables. Known for his wonderful sense of humor, Jim had an infectious spirit that drew people to him, bringing laughter and happiness wherever he went. Jim's faith was a cornerstone of his life. He loved serving and connecting with the congregation at Wilhite Baptist Church for over 32 years, finding joy and purpose in his involvement with his church family.

He is survived by his loving wife, sons, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brothers, John Jernigan, David Jernigan of Monterey, sisters Jane Whittaker, Belle Durner of Monterey, Carolyn (Bobby) Lane of Cookeville, and Ruby Houston of Crossville. He also leaves behind a host of cherished nieces and nephews.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents, John L. and Mattie Pugh Jernigan; brother-in-law, Keith Durner; and sister-in-law, Jane Ann Jernigan.

Funeral services for Jim will be held Monday, July 21, 2025 at 12:00pm in the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper, Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. Pastor Tim Miles will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow in Brotherton Cemetery. His family will receive friends Sunday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and again Monday from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Stacy Jernigan, Jason Jernigan, Lance Jernigan, Clay Jernigan Jim Shake and Harvey Rockwell will serve as pallbearers.
