Mattie Sue Gahagan Butler, 94 years of age, passed away Saturday morning, Nov. 15th, peacefully at Natchitoches Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Mattie was born on March 20, 1931, to the late Marvin Elizabeth Freeman Gahagan and Russell E. Gahagan, Sr. She was a loving wife and mother, whose spirit and warmth touched many lives around her over the years. Mattie was a secretary for Gahagan & Gahagan Law Firm, Natchitoches, and a retired elementary school teacher at Sunset Acres Elementary School in Shreveport. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church of Natchitoches and dedicated church service to the Altar Guild along with her mother. Her cherished hobbies included bird watching, piano playing, and growing poinsettias.
She is survived by her son, Wiley F. Butler and brother, Russell E. "Buddy" Gahagan Jr., both of Natchitoches;
Mattie is predeceased by her son, Oscar Clarence Butler, III, nephew, Richard Freeman Gahagan, and siblings; Patricia G. Rush and Judge Marvin F. "Mickey" Gahagan. Left to cherish her memory are nieces Tara Abel of Bossier City, Cindy Gray of Acworth, GA, Deborah Rush Walker of Pinehurst, NC, Allyson Corder of Baton Rouge, and nephew Russell E. Gahagan, III of Summerville, SC and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews.
The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to Natchitoches Regional Medical Center, Natchitoches Fire Department, Lagniappe Home Care, Natchitoches Nursing and Rehabilitation Center; Otis R. Barnum, MD; Brian A. Picou, Jr., MD and Darrell Hutson, MD for their care for Mattie.
Honorary pallbearers will be Adam Edwards (Natchitoches Fire District No. 6), Cayln Dowden (Natchitoches
Fire Department), John Abel of Bossier City, Russell E. Gahagan, III of Summerville, SC, Peter Gahagan of New Orleans, and Michael Gray of Acworth, GA.
Funeral service will be held on Monday, Nov 24th, at Blanchard-St. Denis Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m., visitation prior, with Rev. Kristen (Kris) Paul, Trinity Episcopal Church of Natchitoches, officiating. Burial to follow at Memory Lawn Cemetery.
