Graveside Service for Mrs. Maude "Sarah" Garrett, 97, of Alpine, will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 20, 2021, at New Maryland Church Cemetery with Reverend Eric D. Richardson and Reverend Flora Alexander officiating. Visitation will be held at Terry's Metropolitan on Friday, February 19, 2021, from 2 pm until 7 pm and at Mount Zion C.M.E. Church on Saturday, February 20, 2021, from 10 am until 11 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Mount Zion C.M.E. Church.
On Sunday, March 18, 1923, Mr. and Mrs. Frank and Della (Kelley) Barclay of Talladega County, welcomed their daughter Maude, who became fondly known as Sarah. At an early age, she confessed Christ as her Savior, united with Mount Zion Christian Methodist Church and remained a lifelong member until her passing.
She was married to the late Mr. Taylor Garrett Jr. and to this union, five children were born. They were a devoted, loving and caring husband and wife until his passing on December 13, 1975.
"Mrs. Sarah", "Aunt Sarah", "Cousin Sarah", "Mother Garrett", "Granny", "Madea", "Mom", will be remembered as a woman of wisdom and a virtuous woman of God. Often referred to as the mother of Mount Zion, she loved her church and her pastors and was often called upon to share the history of the church and co-chair Pastor's Appreciation Day. She served as president of the Stewardess Board for more than 50 years, vice president of the Missionary Society, treasurer of Sunday school, treasurer of Zone 3 Missionary, Emeritus Worship Leader of the Anniston District Laity Department and the chairperson of the Kitchen Committee and the Birthday Program. She also served as a member on the Board of Christian Education, Commission on Evangelism, Soul Winning Action Team (SWAT), local Lay Council and was the Vacation Bible School song leader for many years. If you ever worshipped with her, you heard her sing one of her many favorite hymns or saw her kneel in prayer and call on the Lord.
Mrs. Garrett was a pillar in her community and was known for her wisdom, generosity, strength, and humor. She was a caregiver to many children in her community. As a part of her commitment to her community, Mrs. Garrett was a member of the Laurel Chapter #108 of the Order of Eastern Star and American Union Relief Society-Pride of New Life.
Very quietly and peacefully on Saturday, February 13, 2021, our Almighty God closed the eyes of our beloved mother and she entered into her eternal rest. Preceding her in death was her caring and devoted husband; her loving parents; two sons, Mr. Willie Louis Garrett and Mr. Thurman Garrett; two granddaughters, Ms. Kelly Joy Chatman and Mrs. Crissy Garrett Rowell; five sisters, Ms. Sylvia Kelley, Ms. Ruth Barclay, Mrs. Mattie Lee Long, Mrs. Margaret Swain and Mrs. Louise Seals; and four brothers, Mr. Luther Barclay, Mr. Clyde Barclay, Mr. Willie P. Barclay Sr. and Mr. Christopher Barclay.
Precious memories will live forever in the hearts of those who loved her. She leaves three devoted and loving children, Ms. Beulah Smith of Silver Spring, Maryland, Mrs. Glenda Chatman of Childersburg, Alabama and Mr. Eddie Frank (Christine) Garrett of Alpine, Alabama; a special nephew, Mr. Dexter Truss; fifteen grandchildren, twenty-seven great grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and many, many friends.
