Maureene Lynn Huemme, age 73, passed away Friday, October 3, 2025. "Reene," as she was affectionately known, was born in Indiana and moved often in childhood and adulthood before becoming a Floridian for most of her life.
The eldest child and only daughter, Maureene played a significant role in caring for her four younger brothers who lovingly called her "Kitty." Maureene found passion and purpose early in life nurturing as both a mother and as a registered nurse. Her career would include many roles beginning in obstetrics, with the largest span as a surgical nurse where she was a favorite coworker of many.
She personified the gift of hospitality and often hosted family, friends and anyone they wanted to bring along. She was known for her excellent home cooking and no one ever left hungry. She delighted in making a loved one's favorite dish. Everyone in her circles looked forward to her holiday cookie trays.
A woman of many talents, Maureene was known for her beautiful soprano voice from high school through her years in various church choirs. She was an excellent gardener and seamstress. Countless kids were blessed by her handmade sparkle socks, bibs and crocheted blankets.
Maureene loved to serve others and lived out her faith volunteering with Marriage Encounter, her local crisis pregnancy center, and with medical missionary teams in multiple countries. She gave generously to causes dedicating to providing a better quality of life for others domestically and abroad.
She championed those she loved. She cultivated relationships and made time to visit people all over the country. Her handwritten notes of congratulations or condolences, along with her Christmas cards and letters in her beautiful condensed script, reminded everyone of her sincere unconditional love.
An avid traveller, Maureene relished in cultural and culinary experiences. Whether it meant a long road trip with her famous snacks, rustic camping or a luxury experience, she was determined to see a good bit of the world. Her home is full of treasures and books that she collected as remembrances of her adventures.
A delightfully eclectic and occasionally eccentric woman, she was truly one of a kind. She was a great listener and always up for a long chat. She lived the Girl Scout way of "make new friends, but keep the old." She liked chef curated meals and equally relished Cheetos, Coke, hot dogs and doughnuts. She appreciated classic movies along with sci-fi. She never tired of visiting art galleries all over the world, and yet deeply appreciated local artists and refrigerator art created by her grandchildren. Even as her life collected more than her share of sorrow and loss, she knew well how to live in the moment and to find joy.
Preceded in death by her father, Laverne "Mac" McGrath, her brother, Matthew McGrath and her former husband, Don Huemme. Those left to cherish her memory include her mother, Beverly McGrath; her beloved husband of the last 28 years, Billy Martin; her brothers David McGrath [Cindy], Mitchell McGrath [Becky], and John McGrath; her daughters Heather Nations [David], Alicia McMillan [Donnie], Sarah Stein [Kevin]; her step-daughters Jamie Johnson [Dusty] and Angelique Martin; 22 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, November 16 at 10:00 am at Curlew Hills Memorial Gardens in
Palm Harbor, FL.
"What you do in the present - by painting, preaching, singing, sewing, praying, teaching, building hospitals, digging wells, campaigning for justice, writing poems, caring for the needy, loving your neighbor as yourself - will last into God's future. These activities are not simply ways of making the present life a little less beastly, a little more bearable, until the day when we leave it behind altogether. They are part of what we may call building for God's kingdom." - N.T. Wright, Surprised by Hope
