MAURETTA MARIE GARDY (nee Gray) age 97, beloved wife for 55 years of the late Richard; loving mother of Linda (Robert, dec.) Van Tuyl of Chardon OH, Douglas (Sue) Gardy of Andover OH, Thomas (Lisa) Gardy of Calabash NC , Jennifer (Mark) Hess of Painesville, OH and Melissa (Mark) Carroll of Siera Vista AZ; devoted grandmother of 8 and great-grandmother of 18; cherished daughter of the late Maurice and Frances (nee Russell) Gray; dearest sister of Newell (Kay) Gray of TX; dear aunt and great-aunt of many.
Mauretta was born on December 2, 1927, to Maurice and Frances in Lakeworth Florida. From the age of four until the age of twenty-one, she lived on South Port Island in Maine. Mauretta met the love of her life, Richard, and the two were happily married in 1951. The two of them decided to settle down and start a family together, bringing 5 wonderful children into the world. She was a caring and loving mother to her children, and a dutiful caretaker of her patients during her time employed as a floor nurse and later night supervisor at Heather Hill from 1968 until retirement in 1993 after having worked for 25 years. She was a sober member of AA since 1974 and was well respected among her peers for her strong will. Mauretta was an avid reader and enjoyed cross stitching and horseback riding. She and her husband Richard got the opportunity to travel to all 50 states, making countless memories along the way. Mauretta passed away peacefully on October 5, 2025, and will be dearly missed by all those who had the honor of knowing her.
Graveside service Saturday, October 11, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Alexander Harper Cemetery (2036 S County Line Rd, Geneva, OH 44041). Family will receive friends to pay tribute to and celebrate the life of Mauretta at THE DeJOHN Funeral Home & Crematory of Chardon (formerly Ritondaro) 126 South St. (Rt. 44, south of Rt. 6/Chardon Square) SATURDAY from 11:00AM – 1:00PM.
