Maurice Fonda Wooden was born on May 8,1948, in Portsmouth, Virginia, to the late Clarence Wooden and Mary White Wooden. On September 5, 2025, Maurice peacefully departed this life, entering eternal rest. He received his education through the Portsmouth Public School System and remained a proud resident of the community throughout his life. A devoted and faithful member of Centennial Baptist Church, Maurice served under the leadership of Rev. Gregory Boothe Jr. for many years. His commitment extended beyond worship; he was employed by the church in various roles, from church premises security to landscaper, often with his son Donte by his side. Donte was rewarded with a memorable $5.00 payment; Donte's first taste of "cheap labor," as Maurice would jokingly say. Maurice's greatest joys included cheering for his beloved Washington Redskins, later known as the Commanders. He especially relished singing "Hail to the Redskins" after their rare victories over the Dallas Cowboys, knowing full well his sons were loyal Cowboys fans. One of the most cherished moments of his life was when his sons surprised him with 50-yard line tickets to see his team play. A passionate lover of music, Maurice found comfort and joy in the sounds of Motown. His sons often accompanied him to appointments and errands, filling the car with the soulful rhythms he adored. He was especially thrilled to attend his first Earth, Wind & Fire concert; a memory he held dear. Maurice leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter, survived by his two sons: Donte Owens (Danielle) of Suffolk, VA, and Quinton Wooden (Michelle) of Portsmouth, VA; three granddaughters: Donte'sha "Dymond," Liyah, and Saraih; and two great-grandsons: Jai'den and Marquan. He is also remembered fondly by his sisters, Barbara Ann Jones and Willie Mae Mitchell, both of Virginia Beach, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Among them, a special friend, Janie Minor, held a meaningful place in his heart.
